I have a 2008 SRT 10 and consider either a Borla exhaust or other. Reason is the heat development in the cabin, which sometimes gets a little hot in FL. Can anybody tell me, how much louder the Borla is? I don't particularly care for much noise and am quite happy with the sound of the exhaust as it is now. Aby advice about a different system but Borla?

I had a Borla catback system on my 04 when I bought it. I didn't think it was super loud with the factory manifolds and cats, but it is a deep tone, so it tends to "carry" a little more or reverberate through things. My dad had a **** stock 03 for a while and I thought it was awfully quiet unless you really jumped on it. Similar kind of tone, though slightly more muted and definitely lower volume. I really like the Borla sound over the others out there, but that's just my personal preference.

However, with a gen 4 you already don't have the crossover pipe in the back, so just swapping out mufflers likely isn't going to do much for heat. You'd really have to dump at least the rear cats if not all 4 of them to see any kind of difference. A catback system is going to look almost identical to what it on your car already, so I wouldn't expect it to change much but the sound.

Your BEST option for cooling the sills, footwell, AND cabin is also the least-costly: HiFlow Bolt-in Cats!

Replaces 4 OE cats with Bolt-In 2 HiFlow cats. Diameter options, Substrate options. Tip Options.... Net result is ~~120f cooler all around, with a 'pleasing' mellow increase in decibels. NOT obnoxious, even at WOT. Built to Order for G3-4-5.

96.5 - 02 G2 Options too.

had a gen2 with Borla and the sound was amplified. I put Borla mufflers on my 08 and it did NOT change the sound. Disappointed. Another owner on this site had the same experience a while back.

The best way too cool the cabin is the Belanger exhaust with headers & cats. They eliminate the crossover pipe under the cabin which keeps the cabin much cooler. They are slightly louder than stock but using the stock cat back keeps the sound in check. I added the Corsa cat back last summer and that made the car much louder. Remember, the Chrysler engineers called the crossover pipe "The Ring of Fire" for a reason.

I have a gen 3 Copperhead. I removed the OEM cross over cat back set up. Replaced it with a Billy Boat cat back set up that I found on ebay. It's old new stock made in 2009, I was lucky to find it. It sounds amazing, louder than stock and just enough rumble muscle car sound. I wrapped both sides with a the heat shield insulation (white blanket type) and metal ties. No more heat on the door sills and the cabin is nice and cool. After cruising for a couple hours you can touch the door sill with your hand.

I have a 2005 Copperhead as well. Put on the Borla Cat back and ordered the high Flow Cats from Partsrack. I love the sound of the car. It is deeper, and has a good rumble. I know the 2005 and 2008 cars are very different, so not sure how it would sound on that car. But the Borla Cat back and the Hi Flow Cats are worth the money for the stock 2005 cars, IMHO. I also have 3:55 gears. The gears along with the exhaust make this an entirely different car than a stock 05 - I love driving it. My stock 05 was not nearly as fun to drive as my stock 2001. I was a bit saddened at that - but these two changes really woke this thing up.

I too have a Gen III but a 2003 and I have a Borla sitting in my garage waiting for the Belanger high flow cats to come in before installing. I'm looking forward to how it sounds! You wouldn't happen to have any sound bytes of your setup would you? Also debating a set of headers.

I left one important fact out. After installing the Billy Boat cat back set up I purchased a custom tune from Roe racing. Talk about waking the car up, this did the job for me. The tune also helps keep the engine cooler with fan speed tweaks and other benefits like eliminating the skip shift limiter.

StumpDDS - I do not but I could make some. How to get them to you. I LOVE the sound at idle. You will love the sound, and the heat reduction, not to mention the power increase.

Arnold Rod- Did you have that professionally done (the Custom Tune?) ? I'll look it up. Dont want to get too crazy, thought about headers, not sure that would make a big difference ? I have read where headers and intake, unless you are racing, are not a big jump. Thoughts ?

Thanks,

John

John, about the custom tune. I purchased it with the device that plugs in to the OBD port. It's a package deal option and plug and play do it yourself. Once you have the device future tunes can be purchased and sent to you via email. It's worth the investment believe me you will be happy with it. The device will also download and store the factory tune just in case you need to swap back for a smog test etc.

Thanks Arnold, can you let me know which one you purchased ? There are multiple ones at Roe. I guess I should just phone them. I am already having a ball with this car. I do have some Exhaust issues, will post here.

Thanks!

Stray Cat: After I sent you that reply about the exhaust sounds I ordered some Belanger headers hehehe. I can't freaking wait!! Also, I looked on Roe Racing and they have a few different tune packages but when you click into each one it'll tell you at the top which car they're good for ie 03-06 Viper or 96-02 Viper, etc. I'm very interested in this too. I wonder if this would be a better way to go rather than taking it to a dyno shop and having it dyno tuned. Might be cheaper?

A true dyno tune is always going to be better as it can adjust for your specific car and conditions, but a canned tune is a reasonable way to go as well. Generally speaking you would expect most modern engines to be in a fairly good tolerance of each other, so a canned tune should cover it okay. Mostly just depends on what you're going for. Max power or just a noticeable upgrade.

I'd be just fine with a canned tune. Only thing is I have no idea what to say or ask for in terms of what kind of tune I would want ie what kind of vehicle tune and details when ordering an SCT flash device. Do you happen to know roughly what the cost difference would be between dyno and canned?

For a canned tune you would generally just tell them what mods are on the car. Usually that's as simple as the intake and exhaust (K&N filter and headers/cats/mufflers for example). There are some other things that are typically done with those tunes as well that are just quality of life for people. Stuff like the skip shift eliminator, rear O2 sensor "disable", and different radiator fan turn on temps to keep the engine cooler. The general theory behind a canned tune is that the tuner has seen enough cars with the same mods to have an average tune file that works well for any engine with those mods out of the box.

A true dyno tune cost would depend on who you have doing it for you. When I did the cam swap in my car I went that route. I paid quite a bit more by the time everything was said and done, but I also had to do a lot of back and forth with my tuner and had to do a ground up tune for drivability as well, not just trying to get the top end power dialed in. He gave me a starter tune when I first rebuilt the engine and I would drive it around for a while then pull the adaptive values out of the ECU table to send back to him and he would tweak the tune again and send it back to me. Probably did that at least 4 or 5 times to get the general "drive" tune working so the car felt good driving around. Then I rented a dyno for a half day or so and did something similar. I'd do a pull on the dyno, send him the graph, and he'd send back an updated tune. I think we did something like 8 or so pulls by the time it was all said and done. This got the wide open throttle dialed in so the engine was running safe for hard acceleration. I track the car once a year, so this was my biggest concern. I didn't want to hurt anything since I knew I was going to be running it ******* the track. When it was all over I think it was close to $1500 for tuning from start to finish, maybe a little more since I can't remember if I included the dyno rental cost in that number.

I am just looking for a noticeable improvement. Running cooler, would love to investigate that. I have 3.55 gears, Borla Exhaust and Custom Cats from Partsrack. Love the sound and the performance improvement. Was told that Intake/K&N filters, add about 8 hp.

StumpDDS - I understand that the set up you ordered is really really nice and sounds great. I went with the Borla based on a friend in the Prowler Club. I am very very happy with the sound and performance, no experience with them only, just with the high flow cats AND the Borla ordered from the Partsrack and I love it. It does also run much much cooler.

Roe lists a number of options for Gen III cars. I'll research further, but seems you tell them your mods, and they send you those changes, like you mentioned, exhaust, Gears, Fans, Cam etc. If I could do that, that would be super cool.

Stray Cat:
The tune will be created specifically for your snakes year, model, upgrades, etc.
As well as the elevation where you're at and the highest octane grade that you will be using. The other tweaks that are included make the snake a lot more comfortable and enjoyable to drive. You can ask for a vallet tune as well just in case you ever need to drop it off at a stealership etc. My Copperhead is a Sunday driver and sometimes a daily driver. So this application was the right fit for me, and it literally takes ten minutes to upload the tune. I also recommend calling Roe racing the guys are extremely helpful and informative. And the guy that helped me drives a Gen 3. He told me exactly what to expect and the difference that I would notice. He was dead on every thing happened exactly like promised.

Thanks Arnold - I will absolutely do this. malcoll, yes, there is a bit of drone, but not at any cruising speeds. It is minimal IMHO and I LOVE the idle of the car, have not hit WOT yet, waiting to upgrade the rear end. But my old stock 2005, compared to this one with the Gears, High Flow Cats and the Borla, two entirely different cars. I have other cars, have owned a lot of cars. This one is special. It is in worse shape than I had anticipated, (Bought without personally inspecting ) but there is nothing insurmountable we are addressing everything and it will be super fun. Already is! I had a guy yesterday about broke his neck looking at it as I passed him. Kinda fun, right?

Maybe I should start another thread, but have any of you noticed your exhaust systems "Growing" as the car heats up ? My Borla Cat Back, and Partsrack High Flow Cats, the chrome tips are perfectly centered in the exhaust opening on the side panels. Start the car, warm it up, and they "grow" by about 1/2 inch! No kidding, they will push back up to 1/2 inch and it can actually cause a loud "popping" noise as the Tip grows past the exhaust opening. Ever seen this ? Maybe I should post a new thread ? I have also read that the high flow CATS, can possibly crack ? Is this part of that problem ?

Thanks,

John

Yes, they do “grow” in length as they get hot. They should be positioned closer to the front of the car rather than centered when you install them to account for this. Also, drill a hole in them once you have them where you want them and insert a self tapping ***** to lock them in place; because over time they will loosen and drop down (ask me how I know).

Yep, the install instructions actually tell you to position them about as far forward as you can get. Those parts get hot and are pretty long to start with, so thermal expansion adds up by the time you get to the end of the system.

OK,

Great - thank you. BYAIC, I am assuming you mean a self tapping ***** ? or a Hanger ? Where do you install that on this system ? Cats ? Muffler ? And you know because it happened to you ? :)

Thank you,

John
