It appears that splattered bugs on my front end have damaged the clear coat on my GTS. Although 95% have come off, some appear to have chemically attacked the paint.

Anyone else see this?

Tom,

Try using a light rubbing compound like 3M light scratch remover.
Bird droppings will do the same thing. You never want to let stuff like that sit on the car. I usually carry a spray wax and a
soft cloth with me.

Good luck,

Steve

Hummmmm.... H-D bug remover.....

Is this not mineral spirits which most bug removers are?

I have just started using Bug Off which is sold at RV shops and it is not mineral spirits. It cuts bugs almost instantly.

I wonder if anyone else has used it.

I may get a bra for car just for long trips....

Actually.....

There probably is a speed at which impact with a bug does immediate damage.

Anyone know how high that is? (maybe it was that 135)

Any one that lives in Florida knows especially how bad the "Love-bugs" are. What I do is wait for the car to cool down with the hood open. I wait 1-2 hours and then clean the frontal areas where the bugs hit. It is critical to remove them. I learned with my 91 BMW 850i, it is black and when i drove it to school it colleceted the bugs in the morning and then in the afternoon when I'd get home. It was WAY too late for the bugs that hit in the morning, they already did their damage. Now I have specks of missing paint in the form of the typical "V" shape "Love-bug" splatter. I have some damage on the RT-10, but I tried to remove them with everything mentioned, but I'll need a paint job to fix it. It's nothing to be alarmed, I just notice it and bothers me.
I got to the point to test some ideas out. I wanted to put a film of Saran wrap on the contact edges where the bugs would hit and remove it at destination. I never tried it since the car is black and i don't want the wrap to fuse to the hot paint. Has anyone else thought of this? Or done it on another car?

Vip-RT10,

Rather than using Saran wrap, you can use a product called clear bra, which has been mentioned here. I don't know exactly where to purchase it but in may be in the archives.

Clearbra is at http://www.clearbra.net./home.html, and is real expensive. I guess it comes in large dimensions. They won't sell direct, at least to me. When I get my 03, I plan to truck it to Salt Lake and have the whole car enclosed with the stuff.

3M makes similar material at http://products.mmm.com/us/auto_marine_aero/products/aad.jhtml?powurl=GSWSTWG6S9beGSLPLPKL4XgeGST1T4S9TCgvPKD7VS0CHGgl
3M is also pretty expensive. You can get it at NAPA special order. It is sold in sizes up to 24" width.

JC Whitney makes a much cheaper material. It's about 10x cheaper, but only comes in 6" widths.

I've used everything but the Clearbra. I can't tell the difference between 3M and JC Whitney, as far as ease of application. It takes practice to learn how to install. The front of the car may not be the best place to learn. I learned on the sidesills.
