HELP! I've found a car that looks pretty nice, but I just found out that it's a Canadian car. In your opinion, is there any significant difference in the value between a Canadian car and an American car? Some of the gauges are still in BAR instead of PSI, but most have been changed to reflect American rather than metric.

I know, I'm probably opening an old wound, but I need to learn what I can quickly.

For what it's worth, I'm not purchasing the car as a collector vehicle ... it's going to be my almost, daily driver.

Thanks for any help that can be offered.

Canadian prices should be much higher for a few reasons. If you are in the states you are going to have to worry about the fact that the dollar is practically equal and then equate importing which makes importing the car almost improbable imo. Right now the cars are rarer to find in Canada so they are going for higher prices. If you are in the US, I don't see how it would make sense to buy a Canadian car but maybe other members can shed light on this. The only way you don't pay import fees to my knowledge is if you have the car for 6 months before importing?

As far as I know, in recent years, there are almost no differences between Canadian spec cars and Federal spec American cars(not California). In the last year, the front bumper crash speed has come in line, leaving Canadian spec cars having daytime running lights and metric speedos as differences.

When it comes to price, cars of the same vintage are usually cheaper in Ameerica, but then again it depends on where the dollar is trading at.

What kind of car are you looking at?

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear enough on what I was asking. This is a USED '01 Viper that was manufactured in the US for Canadian delivery, then brought BACK into the US with 0 miles on it. Heck if *I* know how all of that is economical, but I believe it's called the GREY MARKET.

My true question is whether the Canadian car holds less value than the same car that was manufactured for the US market?

if this is the case, just focus on drive out price, once you put x10k miles on it, any price effect will be minimal, esp if bought right

I believe it's called the GREY MARKET.

you are correct, but that term more for cars that had to be federalized for re-importation, back in the day, mostly emissions and safety......

My true question is whether the Canadian car holds less value than the same car that was manufactured for the US market?

can use this for bargaining with the seller

I don't ever really look at the numbers, just the relative position of the needle. You don't really have time to concentrate enough to read numbers while you're driving. I don't even read my speedo when I'm on my crotch rocket ... I know what it feels like as you pass through each 50 mph increment.:D I only look when I back off and slow down enough to be safe looking.

Mine is not in Bar, but it has no problem going to a Bar :D

As my daily summer driver I have to keep mine away from the bars cause cost of fluids is to much and she drinks alot in a week.

My car was manufactured for Canada and I have had no problems with it.Others have imported cars from the states and have had many problems with them. Its a toss up to if the car was a Friday car or not.I am sure well i figure that the cars no matter where they are from would get the same treatment but maybe they hide that from us igloo livers eh.

I think ANYTHING unusual about the car will make it harder to resell, and thus, less valuable. Most ppl would probably take the US car here in US just because it is 'no issue.' That presumes you can find an equal car for same money. Just my 2c.

Based on Doug's input and the seller's attitude about the car, I think this one is about to become my first Snake.:D I'm heading to Ft Laudertail (no, not a mis-spelling) on Friday for the test drive and hopefully, I can register a VIN the first part of next week. Thanks for everyone's input on this and the other cars I've looked at. You guys are a great resource to throw things around with.

I'll keep you posted on what happens ... pics to follow in a week or so if all turns out OK.:drive:

I brought my RT up to Canada, ($15K less than local), and theoretically it is worth less up here because it is from the US. Personally I would rather buy a used car from the California climate than northern. Besides all Vipers are from the US (other than their frames which I understand are made in Canada).

Eh?

I did do the test drive and decided to drop the hammer last weekend. I'm thrilled with the car and can't keep from going into the garage to just stare at it. The biggest difference that I can find in the Canadian car is that it has day time running lights. THAT actually will get me a discount on my insurance!

She's a beauty. I had a Sapphire and silver ACR. Beautiful car. I don't know if the photo you posted is an old one of the car or a current one but I would replace the tires ASAP! They look to be the originals. Give JonB @ partsrack a try for some PS2's. The last thing you want to happen is to lose your car over the price of some tires.

The fronts are original ... the backs are PS1's purchased on the last 6 months. I'll do a matching set of PS2's before the Spring gets here. I figure that I'll get SOME use out of the equipment I bought it with. Mechanical first ... tires following shortly afterward.:D
