Thats 2:48.6 for the ACR

Amazing how a car designed 5 years ago is still holding records on nearly every track it has set rubber on.

Would 5th gear even be needed on that course though?

I don't think the 2010 5th gear ratio would be much of a factor. But I think the revised wing and the short throw shifter on the 2010 ACR would lower the times a bit. :)

I know this is a little off topic but in 2003 myself and my driving partner John Dearing took our STOCK 2002 Viper GTS to the OTC (Open Track Challenge) 7 tracks in 7 days and we ran in the "Touring" class which meant street tires with a treadwear rating 160 or higher (no cheater Cups). We came in 2nd in 2002 to no other then Paul Mumford in his "beast" 2001 ACR. This year PMUM moved to the Unlimited Class in his Comp Coupe (which he won) Our new competition was a Mosler 900 coming in at like 2,000 lbs

To make our long story shortat the end of 6 days were were tied with the Mosler at 3 track wins each but alas our 3,400 lbs. stock GTS couldn't keep up on the last short, tight Derek Daly track and we came in 2nd again

All in all I think we made a pretty remarkable showing against and on paper superior Mosler MT900 in our stock Viper.

The back straight at VIR is very long, so 5th might be needed or you'd need to breath off in 4th.

If what was said earlier in this thread that top speed is 154 in a ZR-1 I've hit 156 in a 2008 ACR without touching the rev limiter in 4th on the front straight of Willow Springs, I think it pulls strong to close to 160 mph in 4th.

A quick calculation assuming a 27.1" rear tire, 3.07 gears and a 6,200 RPM rev limit shows that 4th is good for 163 MPH...granted, you certainly wouldn't want to be ******* the limiter on every run down that straight just from a wear and tear standpoint, but I guess if you were aiming to make a point (like reporting a good number in a test like the one above), you wouldn't have to shift to 5th.

Very interesting what other cars where in your "Touring" class at that time. Seems like the Viper dominated. :)

The above picture shows the 4.1 mile course which cuts down the back straight away by a 1/3. If they ran the 3.7 mile course which keeps the back straight away in tack then I would say yes to fifth gear. Which is the configuration for the most track events using the full course..

In the video i posted with Randy Pobst driving my car he turned a 3.02 3rd lap out on this course, in my stock viper at the time, with me in it, and some lap trafffic. Top speed on the grand course is done on the front stretch about 148 or so. The back straight, which is cut way short, top speed was around 145 i think, so no 5th gear was needed or used.
