Chattering noise after hard braking on my 01\' RT. Normal?

Hello out there;

My 01' RT has about 2K on it so far. I went out for a drive and wanted to check out the ABS. More initial tire skid than I would have thought, but it stops like it's tied to a tree!

After my first hard brake in a straight line from about 50mph I came to a complete stop. When I started moving forward, I heard a very noticeable "chatter" for about two seconds. This did not seem right! I tried several more quick brake stops, and it did it again; but NOT every time.

What is this sound? Is it something potentially dangerous? Should the pedal "pulse" like on normal cars with ABS? The Viper tires only chirp for a second when stomping on the brakes. Why no pedal pulsing?

Any comments would be appreciated as always. My dealer has sold three ABS Vipers this year, but no one has needed more than an oil change, so there is no repair history.

Thanks,

Jim Wallace

I dont have ABS, or an answer.....but I sometimes hear what you describe after a hard stop, and then REVERSING! Like the brake pads are "rattling" in the caliper for just a second. [Pace Car work often demands a near-panic pull-off-stop, and then immediate reverse to the staging spot.]

Maybe an E-brake adjuster thingee?

To find if you have an ABS Pedal-Pulse, try your exercise in the wet.....even in a parking lot. Much easier on tires and other equip, and can be accomplished at much slower speeds.........

Jim, The noise that you here after an ABS stop is pressurized fluid being transferred between the master cylinder and the ABS pump[ABS self-diagnosis test]normal! I have now driven six or seven ABS Vipers and each one has bin a little different, some pulsed and some didn't.

Hope this has helped?

Viper Wizard;

Thanks for responding.

My question isn't so much about "pedal pulse" as it is about the "Chattering" after a complete, hard stop. When I begin to accelerate after my test stop, that's when the loud chattering happens. The chattering goes on for only about 3 seconds.

Is the chattering sound the pumping you are describing? Sort of like the ABS is recharging itself?

Whatever it is, it doesn't sound like a sound that I have ever heard from any car with ABS. Maybe it is just a Viper thing.

Any more comments are appreciated. Thanks also to Jon B. I will try your safety brake trick jon!

Hey I have a FE GTS and it does the same thing and the car only has 900 mi!
Anyone found the problem. I seriously doubt the ABS pump is making that noise. It's more like a clutch chatter sound or fan chatter. This is really worrying me.
Thanks
