AP Source: Chrysler to cut 800 dealers on Thursday
By TOM KRISHER

DETROIT http://netscape.compuserve.com/pf/s...10&idq=/ff/story/0001/20090512/1746613251.htm(AP) - Chrysler LLC plans to fire up to 800 of its 3,200dealers on Thursday, a lawyer seeking to represent the dealers said on a conference call.
The lawyer, Stephen Lerner, who heads the bankruptcy and restructuring practice of the law firm Squire Sanders, told dealers on the Tuesday call that the automaker plans to reject at least 800 franchise agreements, according to a dealer who listened to the call.
The dealers were told that Chrysler will file a list of dealers it wants to retain with the U.S. bankruptcy court, said the dealer, who asked not to be identified because the call was confidential.
A Chrysler spokeswoman said Tuesday that the automaker is working to reduce the number of dealerships along with other restructuring actions. Spokeswoman Kathy Graham said the 800 number was just speculation.
``We do not have any finalized list as of this point in time,'' she said. Asked if the company would soon have a list, she said: ``It's too early for us to say. We're not through that process yet.''
Chrysler, which has received $4 billion in government loans, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on April 30. The company has asked a bankruptcy judge to approve the sale of all its assets to a new Chrysler controlled by Italy's Fiat Group SpA.
With Fiat as a partner, the U.S. government has said it will provide up to $6 billion more in financing to help Chrysler get through the bankruptcy process.
A message was left for Lerner.
The dealer said the law firm asked the dealers who think they might lose their franchises to post $4,000 each so the lawyers could begin the legal fight.

You better hope you dont have a deposit down on a 09 at any of these dealers:omg:

Did I read this right? A lawyer who specializes in "bankruptcy and restructuring" called dealers and told them he heard that 800 dealers will lose their franchise and he's putting the squeeze on the 800 dealers for $4,000 each (that's $3.2M)?

Aren't these lawyers called "ambulance chasers"?

It does seem a bit unethical, but on the other hand, a dealership isn't going to get very far on $4k on their own... I wonder what they get for that $4k. If it's full representation from beginning through end, no matter how long it takes, and they're able so somehow get injunctive relief against the rejection of their existing agreement until all appeals are exhausted or a settlement is reached, it might be money well spent.

1 BILLION in Attorney fees will be paid, by the time all the smoke clears from GM's filing!!!!! watch.. Look for a GM filing 6/1 or earlier..

Between GM and Chrysler. Lawyers will be the winners in the end. They are going to make a TON from these 2 companies...

$4,000?? :lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:peanuts....

Thats just a retainer to get them to even look at the case.. Add $400/hour on top of that. And then your talking.

Asspirations, good thing you got your deposit back when you did!

I dont think my dealer was going to be one of the 800 but who knows..They were very up front on my car from the beginning. I think they thought their might be a chance and did not want to go through the hassel of having customers getting pissed..
I also have first option on the ACR if its built but I dont think my car will sell for what I want so my dream is basically dead as far as the ACR goes.:(

You could always add the ACR aero package to your car.

According to this snippet in the article I would hope that Tator's and some of our other supporting dealers will be spared.

Rural Dealers Safer
David Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan, said many of the dealers being tagged for closure likely have at least an inkling that their franchises will be canceled.
“The rural dealers where the domestic brands are very strong are not likely to be hit as hard as the urban dealers,” Cole said. “One of the objectives is to give dealers larger territories. If you go out into the middle of Iowa and have one dealer, that dealer is probably safe.”

Most folks have NO IDEA what the Chrysler dealers are going through...and have been going through since about January. The AX is supposed to fall on some dealers tomorrow via FED EX or UPS letters. But then again, we worried about it all last week because the letters were scheduled to be delivered last Friday, however, it was put on hold for a week. Believe me...it's been a VERY stressful week here in rural PA, and I'm sure in many other dealerships.

That article looks like propagada. Of course there is some cost to idling factories. However, independent of any Bankruptcy it would not be a great idea to keep cranking out new cars with massive amounts of cars still on dealer lots. For example, Toyota is not filing bk and it IS temporarily halting producton at some plants to let demand catch up to inventory.

Now WHO is going to buy the Viper unit? Do we know the 2-3 bidders? Or will it go to Fiat?

That's why I took the buyout last November, after 25 years with the company. I stepped back and looked at the direction they were heading. From what I saw there was nothing but finger-pointing at who was to blame for the mess they were in, no one had any fresh ideas on how to right the ship, no new products coming online to save the day, etc.

Chrysler helped me gain a lot of nice things over those 25 years but I guess I can forget about an early retirement. They will owe me a 25-year pension when I'm ready to retire, if there's anything left of the company by then. If not, then the government gets to finance it.

On the bright side I did manage to land a new job in my same line of work with a much more secure company in the same area. No need to pack up and move and I get to keep on doing something I enjoy for another 10-13 more years while building up a second pension.

I did see that and laughed:rolaugh: My wife would probably say to keep it that way as I have driven her crazy the last year talking about getting a ACR when I have a brand new Viper sitting in the garage.....Kevin

Thanks for your thoughts Brian. We did receive something...but it was GOOD NEWS! :2tu: We made the cut...we are safe. Denny was optimistic and Jeff thought for sure they would cut us. We are still in shock here in rural PA.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday. :drive:
