Clutch noise when engaging

I have a 94 rt. When engaging the clutch I sometimes get a squeal/grind sound. This immediately goes away when released. It happens most often in 1st or reverse slowly getting into the garage and at stop signs/lights when moving slowly. Anyone have a guess what this might be?

I've had this exact thing for some time. Took it to my Vipertech and he initially thought it was a throwout bearing, and then hearing it wasn't so sure. I've been waiting on it as it seems to come & go.

According to carfax my car had the clutch plate and flywheel replaced 4000 miles ago. I would assume anyone that went to that trouble would also have replaced the clutch pilot bearing and the throwout bearing. I can't get that information so I don't know.

I thought generally if it was a throwout bearing you would hear noise with the clutch engaged as well. Mine sounds perfect except at about 50% clutch pedal. It immediately goes away if you engage or disengage.

We are pulling the tranny next weekend to see if we can figure out what is going on in there. Other then the clutch alignment tool any other special tools I might want to pick up?

I have had the experience that the tech forgot to even put the pilot bearing in. Its a decent assumption but not always correct. Hopefully that's not your issue

Take a close look at the slave cylinder, pilot bearing and friction surfaces.

You ought to document the process with a GoPro or something, that would be really cool to see, good luck.

Just a suggestion - Clutch inspection from outside is a bit tricky sometimes. Jack up Viper, remove trans inspection plate and do a visual inspection on clutch disc and HRB cycles using a borescope.. If everything checks out, Trans removal will be necessary. Could be worn bearings (hrb or pilot), bad helix hub, you'll know soon enough im sure. Always install new Pilot bearing and HRB to ensure solid repair. If these basic parts weren't replaced at time of clutch service, could be an issue. We're Viper clutch specialist so feel free to give a call for tech help if you want.

That brings up another point. Where would you buy this from? I am considering changing pilot bearing slave cylinder and throwout bearing while I am in there. Where do you trust buying parts from?

i to have had the same noise with my 4,100 mile 1994 . would you go with a solid brass pilot or a roller bearing .

LUK stock clutch kit $158 @ Rock Auto Includes Pilot Bearing, Clutch Plate, Pressure plate, Throwout bearing and alignment tool :) Slave cylinders available on the Bay or Partsrack, JonB for all of the above and of course all the other Vendors that Advertise here.

Peanuts money for a Luk clutch, of course if your engine is Supercharged or is producing big numbers then there are plenty of options out there if you have deep pockets, Spec Clutches, Centerforce, BBG Toddy Performance clutches.......So how much you wana spend :D

Everything was like brand new except the pilot bearing. It was bone dry and all the bearings were twisted. Found a new one in stock at O'Reilly. Its back on the road and better then ever 8 hours later.

I got another roller bearing because thats what O'Riley had in stock.
(Beggars can't be choosers and I wasn't in a place I could leave my car unassembled for 2 days)

I think after looking at the shape of the roller bearing I may have opted for brass.
My guess is there may have been some forcing involved getting the transmission aligned that caused the damage to begin with.
