cold wet tires + 2 degree weather not so good

just finished washing the car and went out for a ride and accidentally did a doughnut and half today while turning at a intersection at 3krpm 1st gear. no car or anyone on the road so i did a good recovery. these cars loose grip so easily.

out of all the spectators 1 guy said i was a *******

also drove home last week in pouring weather going 40km and i was hydroplaning all the way home.


anyone else lose traction on the road without intentionally doing it?

no never heard of a viper doing that in cold weather....

also never heard of that happening when you put oil on the tires or a banana peel under the tires

??? I'd say that is because there was no friction between your tires and the road. i.e. loss of traction = loss of friction. No friction = no transfer of rubber particles from tire to road surface.

Last month, early morning I exited a large roundabout onto a dual carriageway, eased on the gas (no other cars around and I was NOT in a hurry) I guess I was doing around 30mph max, and the back end came round on me! That's the first time in 3 1/2 Years the car has unexpectedly caught me out, Both feet in and corrected the rear end but I was not expecting it at that speed. Cold roads, old PS1 tires I guess I had it coming Same with me on the tires, no marks on the road

I now have brand New PS2s fitted, they still have the stickers on them, looking forward to trying them in the Spring

I once had the Viper spin around on me while in a parking lot after it got real cold. I also had runflats on which turn as hard as hockey pucks at cold temps and have little to no grip. If you had run flats and it was 2 degrees I could see the back end acting like it was on ice the whole time.

As for the OP, yes. Gotta watch that. Also not sure where you are located, but those temps normally mean salt or liquid calcium on the roads. That will eat into your Viper like me at a buffet.

I have but not because of anything being wet. I never, ever drive it in the rain. I consider it sacrilegious.

The main thing for you to know and understand is the AGE of your 4 contact patches. "The Year Matters" of the production date of your tires, and is stamped on them. 3-year old RunFlat/RunCraps are good for flower-planters. Period. Regardless of tread.

Truth is, fresh PS-2s can and do handle Rain with confidence-inspiring grip. Good Tires? Good Aligement? Good skills? Good To Go! I consider it a sacrilege to NOT drive my Viper...just because it might get wet. Below freezing is another matter, esp on PS2....

Of course its a lot more FUN in the dry and warm!

SInce you just joined our group a couple months ago, is it a safe assumption that you just got this car? As the others have said, you have stated the problem in your title. However... to do a complete 540 degree spin you must have had some pretty good speed going into that turn in first gear. Your tires were cold, your tires were wet, the street had no grip, did you put "tire shine" on? A lot of times when you corner hard you roll a little onto your sidewalls where that slick crap is. What is the "born on" date of your tires? Do a search on tires on this site and you will learn a LOT. Old, hard tires will hdroplane badly. Since you hit nothing, it seems you learned a inexpensive lesson on getting "snake bit". 3000 rpm is right into your torque band on this engine. Give it a little gas going straight at that RPM and the tires will light up, so I'm sure you understand why they let go with the center of balance thrown to one side in a turn.
I've owned mine for 5 years and 20,000 miles and I find when making a turn from one street to another as you were, I leave it in 3'rd gear if I'm just driving normally. Actually, come to think of it, even driving agressively, I shift into 3'rd gear. I just don't floor it until I'm pointed straight again.

been a lurker for a while. had my viper for a year half.

saw no one crossing or cars so instead of slowing down i just held the rpm at 3k and turned. was probably black ice. i live in vancouver so its common. just a stupid decision. no tire shine.

car spun around slowly and instead of facing traffic i gave it some gas so the car spun back in the right direction.

i plan to get some tires at tire rack. do they sell fresh tires only? since for $2000 it seems very cheap.

at dodge in vancouver it cost 3200 for ps2 tires. plus tax

Just get new ones. It is not worth the risk driving on old tires in any type of weather.
