I decided to post this separately so it doesn't get lost in other comments about pricing... This is as objective as it gets. I'm not even going to say my opinion.

I ran some numbers using the Burue of Labor Stats' CPI inflation calculator and the MSRP's of each generation (according to cars.com).

1992 RT/10
- Original MSRP: $50,000.00 -- in 2012 Dollars = $81,647.90

1996 GTS
- Original MSRP: $66,700.00 -- in 2012 Dollars = $97,394.75

2003 SRT10
- Original MSRP: $79,995.00 -- in 2012 Dollars = $99,604.21

2006 SRT10 Coupe
- Original MSRP: $83,145.00 -- in 2012 Dollars = $94,488.35

Another way of looking at it: in 2008 the $100,000 SRT would have cost $93,976, while the $125,000 GTS would have cost $117,470.

It's really hard to calculate inflation on an item that's not really simple like food or water or gasoline.

It's really hard to calculate inflation on an item that's not really simple like food or water or gasoline.

Especially when the car has had massive improvements...

Well calculating inflation in it'self has always been suspect. Basically it's impossible to really get a concrete answer but it's some saps job to do it anywasy... so they are forced to grab numbers from every direction and crunch them together to create an avereage.
That said, the average is still useful in creating a snapshot you can analyze.

example;

1992 RT/10
- Original MSRP: $50,000.00 -- in 2012 Dollars = $81,647.90 -- Baseline

1996 GTS
- Original MSRP: $66,700.00 -- in 2012 Dollars = $97,394.75 -- Trend Up; more excitement generated by people seeing vipers first few years (gotta have it syndrome)

2003 SRT10
- Original MSRP: $79,995.00 -- in 2012 Dollars = $99,604.21 -- Trend Up; viper still gaining fan base / historic dominating splash into racing during previous era certainly didn't hurt

2006 SRT10 Coupe
- Original MSRP: $83,145.00 -- in 2012 Dollars = $94,488.35 -- Trend Down; viper out of racing/economy stable but strong indicators for investors of pending doom... maybe? :dunno:

Something like that is how they do it so it works.

Nice post Chris :2tu:

Actually, kind of a fun premise, and the only thing missing is that all are compared using MSRP. Whereas the early models were virtually spot on to that , since options were non existent, later years had options that often made the car higher than MSRP --- figure a 2010 with base price and 2013 and it should look pretty darn close.

The best thing you have proved is that the auto industry has been much truer to real inflation, than the runaway situation with health care.

Here's a fun one! Versus median household income figures:

1992 RT/10

- Original MSRP: $50,000.00 --in 2012 Dollars with household income correction (97%) = $84,173.09

1996 GTS
- Original MSRP: $66,700.00 -- in 2012 Dollars with household income correction (103%) = $94,558.01

2003 SRT10
- Original MSRP: $79,995.00 -- in 2012 Dollars with household income correction (100%) = $99,604.21

2006 SRT10 Coupe
- Original MSRP: $83,145.00 -- in 2012 Dollars with household income correction (98%) = $96,416.68

2013 SRT Viper Base Coupe
- MSRP (Est): $100,000.00 --
in 2012 Dollars with household income correction (90%) = $111,111.11

Now on a content basis, the cars offer more stuff for about the same inflation adjusted price.

Now let's look at the stuff and see if it is worth it.

More horsepower. worth it

Better brakes. Duh.

Stiffer chassis , better handling. more Duh.

Quaiff style rear end, and smoother transmission. Thank you!

Better stereo. I don't turn mine on in the car, so no added value.

Abs, traction control, ABS, Yaw, launch etc. no value to me, but it may sell more of them.

Better interior. It could be bare plastic and I wouldn't care.

Overall, more car for the same real dollars.

TOTALLY agree Sun! On every point... It's like you read my mind!

One more item though:

Pre-crash event module (Black Box) NO THANK YOU!

In all fairness, I'm sure the 2003-2008s are equipped with them too.

And yet the horse power of the yellows hasn't changed. (sorry, I couldn't resist. You know some "red" guy was going to say it anyway :) )

Already a dealer out here in Utah advertising at 175k. Sounds like a good time to pick up a nice 09/10 or a good price.

I hope you're joking about the $175k. I would never pay over sticker and I really hope no one else will either.

From my point of view

From my point of view... Income is flat. All costs have risen. I can't afford to pay 100% more. Yet, I've always known that I'm fortunate to own my old, "******" viper.
