Reality check, tbey are 35K cars now and plentiful.
Keeping living in your fantasy world. Hang on that "iconic collectible" dream..17 years and counting now.

17 years doesn't constitute collectible status at all(FGT goes against all car logic, so we will omit that). Plentiful, is only something you will here in the Viper world for a car that barely had more than 1000 units built. 13 years from now they will be collectible and I will stand by those words. It's a 17 year old car still worth 50% of its original sticker price and holding. I think the days of rapid depreciation are over for it, it will either plateau for a decade or creep up slowly. Anyone that buys these as an investment is a fool, cars are terrible investments. If that is what you did with your 97 I maintain my last statement, but I will give you the benefit of the doubt and say you knew it wasn't a good investment, as you just entered the Pasta Rocket world which I think hold most depreciation records. Yours was beautiful car, but it was still just an old car as is my 96. But all great collectibles did their stint as just old cars. Some climb back up, some don't. I bought my car to drive, but maybe my children can restore it long after I'm gone and hopefully it is still worth 35K then.

Nice car Dave. Normally I hate stickers on windows or for that matter anywhere. But the windshield decal actually looks factory, like it was meant to be there. Nice touch without being tacky.

As many have stated...what do YOU want. I saw my first viper in 1999 and wanted one ever since. Once I got the funds and made the final decision to pursue a purchase, I did the research and decided what I wanted before I started looking to see what was available. I wanted a 2001 or 2002 Viper Race Yellow RT/10. I found two 2001s on the market and pulled the trigger.

...one more thing...in response to the guy that thinks you can see a B/W from a mile away...REALLY! Step into the real world...there are a billion black, white, grey, blue, red cars out there...a Viper Race Yellow viper stands out with red coming in right behind it.

lol, for that decision criteria I would go with SSG snakeskin green, preferably white stripe with aero package. Trust me on this I know from ohio Serpent Mound trip.:D

Here's my analogy... The GTS is the mid years corvette of Vipers. The B/W is the 63 Spilt window and the ACR is the 67 L88. In this case the B/W seems the clear choice when you factor in the other circumstances.

That's not the first time I have heard the '63 split window compared to the 96 B&W. Its a good analogy, but with 10,594 coupes built, that would count as too "plentiful" by some to ever become collectible. Somebody should tell the guys restoring these that they are living in a "fantasy world".

Re: Confused Newbie deciding between 2001 GTS ACR and 1996 GTS ...Man this is tough!!

Thanks for the replies guys:

Very helpful and some responses had me laughing.

I love the '96 BW. Very classic Viper. It needs a full bath and detail and I will be spending about $10,000.00 on wheels/tires and exhaust so I will be up around $45,000.00.

I love the '01 ACR. As I have read ACRs are limited in number and also very desireable. It is mint!!!. It actually was a solid red ACR from the factory. The salesman as it turns out was wrong. No stripes were ever removed.
I can probably get the price down another grand.
Dealer said if I want stripes he will put them on at no charge. He said there are Viper stripe kits. Next dilemma. White or silver stripes?????:( Or should I leave it solid :(:confused:.

I love both colors. Blue/Whte is classic viper. Red is very striking and racey.

Was never a "red" person but since buying my FGT in '07 in red (fell in love when I saw it at the dealer when I was there to pick up a white FGT I put a deposit down on) also bought a '09 GT500KR in Torch red thereafter (1 of 200). I have been on red kick ever since.

I'll let you know what I decide.

Man this is tough!!!! :confused:

Here's a fact for all the people too ignorant to know them. According to the viper registry.

Total # blue GTS's made -> 2128

Total # red GTS's made -> 1921

Total # red ACR GTS's made -> 235

Grand total # red GTS's made -> 2156

Wow. In the 7 year history of the Gen 2 GTS they made 28 more red ones than blue ones. Wow. Yet there are sooooooooooooooo many more red ones.

LOL at all the people that wander around in their daze minus actual facts.

But the 96' is "iconic", LOL. In this situation I would pick the 96' based on my desire to add boost and the price. It comes down to which one YOU like more, can't go wrong with either choice. No Viper will ever blend in on the highway and they all perform great.

That red total also includes solids, white stripes and silver stripes and black and cognac interior so B/W's are by far the highest production color combo. 96's are more desirable than 97's with unique striping and first year production. Here's a couple of good quotes from Rick Harrison... Rare doesn't always mean desirable and things made to be collectible aren't that collectible. So make of it what you will these sound like 2 very nice cars but the B/W is the better value IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE IN MY OPINION WITH THE INFORMATION PRESENTED HERE.

Re: Confused Newbie deciding between 2001 GTS ACR and 1996 GTS ...Man this is tough!!

Please excuse my post on the Red car, for some reason I thought the car was a Final edition car (2002) which had had the white stripes removed! Going back and reading your first post I see you were talking about an 01 Car. Sorry.

With the extra monies you intend to spend out on exhausts, wheels etc, I personally would keep looking out there until the right car comes along with most of the parts you want.

If Im honest, colour did not play the main part in the car I chose. It was more down to clean history, extras fitted, low number of owners and price. I found my car on the VCA classifieds.

Normally I would cast a vote for the ACR but would have reservations if the owner removed the stripes. That means a repaint of the car. That would cost a lot or be a poor job.

Both great cars , seems like the 96 is better priced. I think people get the idea there are so many red Vipers because of the Gen 1 was advertised, promoted and always associated with red. Same with Gen 2 B/W coupe. The other colors were not as associated with the car. Don't know, don't care. The cars are great no matter the color, buy what stirs the soul and evokes passion for the car.

Re: Confused Newbie deciding between 2001 GTS ACR and 1996 GTS ...Man this is tough!!

Price difference is large, I would see if you could knock off a bit from the 96, but re-sale wise, you will do better with the 8K mile 96 than with the ACR short term. Long term, who knows, but the 96, being the first year of the GTS, will always be highly desirable.

Rims/tires/exhaust should not cost you 10K. Exhaust, maybe $1000. I have a set of chrome 19/20s with tires selling for $3200. Selling a set of 19/19s new in the box here:

http://classifieds.viperclub.org/showproduct.php?product=6378&title=iforged-wheels-2c-new-&cat=7

Good luck in your search and post up pictures when you decide.

Some of these comments are too funny.:rolaugh:

my list would consist of...

1992 rt first of the line
1996 B/W GTS
1997 B/W RT
1998 Championship car
All the GTS-R cars esp 49-52 (i believe they were)
ACR Roadsters (woodhouse dodge)
2002 FE Edition
2010 ACR one of cars

IMHO of course

I am turning this post into my wish list. Got about all of my wish list cars, but need to modify one. The 2002 FE/ACR:

Those stats make me feel better about my red GTS. I like the look of the red with white stripes as much as the blue with white stripes. Only thing that made me jealous as the blue with white stripes was the rarity of it. I was sure there being way more reds made sense, because blue was only two years compared to the red gts which was every year.

That too funny...maybe in your part of the world thier worth 35 although I have not seen a low mile good condition 96 B/W for 35 yet. Not in your part of the woods and esp. not mine. Everything down your way is worth nothing....you can get a nice condo in Florida right now for 50G's. Reality up here in econmic world is they sell for high 40's and early 50's. they have and continue to sell at those prices.

Funny how you say their plentiful, whereas I onlhy see one on ebay this past week and maybe 3 for sale at any givine time. \\

As for Gallardos, I see well,,, lets see,,,15 on autotrader and well maybe twice that much on ebay and who knows how many more on any other given site. No wonder they were worth 180,000 new and 4 years later their worth 100G's....sought after \i guess...lol...you will see alot more gallardos during your travels then you would a B/W, never miind a Viper.

Anyway you continue to bash the all mighty because you got soked on the sale of your 96...its all personal to you...whereas to me its reality. Find me a few adds for a well taken care of stock low ile 96 for 35...i would be interested to see if there is at least one for sale.....Ill show you a few 04-06 ,( @20)Gallardos for under 100g's no problem on ebay as we speak. As for 96 B/W..hmm lets see ..same sight. only 1 B/w....1...not 2...one...and that one is starting price 43900...with scuffs .cracks.and blemishes...and not stock whats or over.

please do factual homework beofre comparing. Just because you gave your away to buy the Gallardo, does not mean that is what the car is worth. Stop trying to convince yourself that you made the right decision when hyou may have not. It seems that way, as you continue to defend your decision.

Once again...go for the 96.....OP...or just wait a few more years and you can get yourself into a 2004 Gallardo, a 180,000 car for around 50,000G\s...the same price the 96b/W and all vipers will be worth for that matter even after all those years.

Blue with white stripes are not rare and the actual facts acknowledge that. It is amazing the mentality of a "shopper." They figure value based on hype, and assume investment planning based on hype. Ask any financial adviser if buying a hyped up car as anything but a toy that will depreciate, is a smart thing to do.

If there is indeed a "shortage" of any color car as some might suggest, I would suggest that is because the owners of those cars are tired of trying to sell them for their jacked up price, with very few buyers falling for the hype behind the, um, investment value :rolleyes:

What are you crazy Dave? Didn't you read SlatherV10's post about, in his words, the "almighty" BW? LOL....
He's convinced his old cars are going to be a nest egg windfall despite their ever sinking prices.
Shoppers know what these cars sell for, only owners like this frozen lunkhead believe they are getting higher prices.

And to justify his dreams he has to knock every other car out there especially other Vipers. Newer Vipers, '97 Blue and Whites, RED Vipers, and now Exotics.
Basically every car he cannot afford to own. :2tu:

Well just to start off ....I think viperlessJon...I can afford alot more than you should care to know. I just don't confuse myself with status over enthusiasm.

For the record, I have neve insinuated that I bought my cars for investment purposes...I think you have me mistaken with someoe else. Maybe its old age..I dont know. I bought my cars because I truly love THAT car. not A car, as do you it seems. I have owned well over 400,000 dollars in cars in my lifetime and have enjoyed and lost alot of money from every single one. I did it then and I will accept losses again and again. I bought my GTS's years ago and can sell them in todays market for what i payed for them. Unlike your Gallardo and many other cars that I have owned in the past which you may only seen pictures of. Please don't try an insult facts. Facts are that your car is worth only what someone is willing to pay for it at market value. Not just what someone is willing to pay. If that were reality then I and many here would like to pay you 30,000 for your Gallardo,but,that is not market value in your neck of the woods and not what you would sell it at unless your starving and need to feed your family. If I like to call my car an all mighty...it had been one and did have that status at one point. That is fact . Not sure why SRT would even think of commemorating this non iconic, irrelevant car. they should have used the red and white or some other collector car out there as the symbol status of the viper. I didnt realize the Shelby which this car was built around and honors came in other colors.
I believe your missing the point and for such...Explaining it to you is a waist of my time. Its obvious you bought and sold the 96 with no regrets, other than your loss in dollars, and have no immotional tyes to your vehicles. They are just symbol status to you. But, on that note...if you do buy on status notes...then why the 96...hmm..seems funny. Again, your loss on the car seems hard for you to accept and thus your position on the car.
When that car came out in 96, i am sure you were not speaking or thinking as you are now. But, since bigger and better as far as power and trend are concerned have evolved, you have changed your position on that car.
Its funny how everyone wants a stryker red car or a blue and white 2013..and how those colors are limited editions...in 17 years the hype of this color combo and exclusivity will be long gone and your thoughts and everyone elses will die off and make the Launch Edition blue and white car just another viper. i think your wrong. History has proven it and will continue to. For people like you, limited cars will never mean nothing unless they are the current model and have status in the current market ( although not sure why you would buy the lowly Gallardo and not the Murcielago,or Aventador for those reasons), unless as you said to me, you cant afford them. Otherwise, the old muscles ,limited cars of the past to you are nothing more than past reality. Oh well...we all have our opinions...I myself still think the 65 shelby, the road runners,chargers,mustangs and corvettes of the past ,,esp the ones that made an impact in those days are worth their weight in gold and have shown that on resale values today for 40 year old cars.
Now, I am not saying that is why i am defending my cars, that they will become collectors and make me some money, i have stated that in many other threads you have responded to with negativity, which you seem to continue to forget, again maybe old age, its normal, but, i truly do believe that this car does and will have a spot in the collector car status in the future, long beofre i would care at that point,but,it will. Wether you or i care or not.
Being a TRUE Viper enthusisast, I respect the foundations that have built and developed this car into what it stands for today, the 1996 Blue and White was one of the earliest cars to put the Viper on the map. Niether you or anyone else can deny that fact.
I love all vipers, i truly think they are a piece of art that can hang with the best of them in every aspect and am proud to own one. Not because of status or collectablity, otherwise I would have purchased a chanmpionship edition 98, or a one off car. Collectability is not what i was scouting for. The love for the car was. the 96 just had a special place in my books and so I purchased it. The only reason i have too for your information, is because i wanted to keep one stock and respect it as it came from the factory. So, i bought another one to play with. You know why......because I can ! You should do the same, oh,but, i forgot, you got a gallardo and feel your status is above mine as you mentioned I cannot afford certain cars. That is the poor mans Lambo isnt it...hmm...its like a guy with a 944 Porsche or Boxter, telling me what i can and cant afford to buy....lol...You dont know me and should keep comments like that to yourself unless you got facts, that goes for car facts as well. Personal feelings do not make the market,
Please read this over carefully so you do not forget the comments i made once again as you do tend to forget quite a bit. i dont need to read about comments I have already anwered to.

Seems to me you will continue to downgrade these cars so as to bring the market value down for them in order for you to feel accomplished for what you sold yours for...lol...its worth the try i guess.

I'm sure whatever you wrote above was insightful and full of self serving reasoning but who the hell has time read your diatribes.
Enjoy your old cars.
