It's about 7:15 pm, I'm coming back from Santa Monica. I'm driving my daily ******, a 2006 Mustang GT, grey with a big Nurburgring sticker on the back. (Not because my Mustang is any Ring King, but just because I had a great time there, and the sticker is a momento)
It's dark out, and cars in my rearview mirror are just vague outlines, in a sea of headlights.
I'm in the fast lane as usual. Right behind me, I see a low car, with wideset foglights. I think, "Hey, is that a Viper?" I tilt my head side to side, and happen to catch the sillouette of the rear view mirrors. They look big, and awkward, like ears on a Howdy Doody dummy. I think, that's no Viper!
We keep driving this way for a bit, through Huntington Beach.
Then this car accelerates towards the slow lane, and gets off at Magnolia. As it passes ahead to my right, I see how low it is, how wide it is, how curvy it is. Now it's off to my side, partially illuminated by the headlights of surrounding cars, and there is just enough light to see it's one of those crazy, exciting looking GTS's. Black, (with stripes, I think) Damm, that car looks awesome! Such a rare, wild animal! Car's headlights jealously play off the curve of the front fenders, the deep side scallop, the upturned tail. It's a treat to see an exciting shape, breaking up the dullness of my long slog homeward. Then the driver gets off the freeway, and my few moments of visual-car-**** ecstasy fleet by, and are gone. The non-descript world of hum-drum automotive shapes once again envelope me, in a Camry-esque depression.
I should have known by the headlight/foglight arrangement, that it was a GTS. But then again, I'm never in front of one, I'm always at the wheel of mine! Mines a 2001 GTS, Saphire/silver stripes. Nice to see one being driven, and to be reminded how cool it looks from the outside, driving down the freeway. Realize that when you drive your GTS, you are brightening up the world around you, bringing joy to sad souls, which I hope counts for my charitible contribution to others!
Was that GTS owner anybody on this forum?
