corroded gas cover on 98 GTS

As the title implies the gas cap latch has corroded to a point where I can't stand it any longer and want to do something. In taking it off, what comes off when undoing the bolt to remove the cover. It looks like an inner portion would come out, I just want to know what I'm about to get into. Thanks.

The cap assy comes off easily enuf...

MGW makes a great replacement fuel cap assy, waaay less $$ than OE...and with a colored Pete logo, and great instructions on how to swap out. Or, you can have the cap refinished IF the OE hinge mechanism is not rotted out.

Bad thing is the latch and the cover pins are made out of plastic. I took mine apart and had it powder coated black. It turned out great but I broke the pins taking it apart and there was no way to put the spring back in. I wound up using some stainless steel fasteners that I found at ace hardware. Only problem is the latch is a little sloppy when opening and closing it. When closed its snug and I am please with it. Someday I will probably go back to polished wheels at that time I will pony up the 850.00 for a new one.

You can have the OE one stripped, polished and re-sealed IF the pitting isn't deep into the metal. If it is, either go the route Jon B suggests or give Paul Scharf a call.....he may have a neat one off a wreck that would be less expensive than a new OEM replacement.

BTW, they are easy off without instruction, getting it back on involves a trick (there're a couple threads on that here, but they're old).... there's a hole in the filler tube (visible but not obvious) that can be used to hold the tube up (using a heavy-wire hook.....I actually use a barbeque skewer with a hook bent in one end) so you can reattach the cap around it. The descriptions in the older threads are way better, and there may be pix as well.

But make sure you put a right angle in whatever you use as a puller, its very easy to slip on just a plain rod and your tool slids out of sight into the gas tank, it takes a lot of pressure on some of them to get the filler neck through the grommet even with rubber lubricant.

I powder coated the base black and chromed with the cap the catch, looks cool you will need to make another gasket for the baes as the powder coating destroyed the original rubber one, I used an old piece of tire inner tube, looks neat.

If you can find an early cap then they don't have plastic hinge pins but brass which is much easier to push out and re-assemble.

Take it off re polish it or have it painted to match your car. I took off the plastic parts and replaced them with hardware. Nobody was the wiser and it looked great.

i had a new one under warranty way back in 2002, the UK price off Chrylser was $1500 ......

a few guys here have had there's chrome plated after the cap corroded
