I actually did change JUST the cats - left the rest of the system stock. I had several conversations with Sean Roe about this effect and his research (dyno) showed that his cats, alone,(I assume all HF cat would achieve a similar result) were responsible for most of the 12-18 hp gain resulting from a typical cat and catback replacement/upgrade. You're right about the sound. There's a definitive deepening and slight volume increase to the "stock" sound.
Interesting divergence of findings, however.
