I just put on the 3" Corsa with RT cats. Sound at idle is louder but not too loud. I can't really go for late night drives now if our baby is asleep. With the lumpy cam it sounds great. Sound on the freeway is quiet with no drone. Maybe quiter than stock. At 3/4 to WOT it is loud but won't hurt your ears. The sound is like a big block with a touch of Ferrari and a touch of Ricer. Different but nice. People seem to like it. Much better than stock...

To sum it up some more:

Corsa=No increase in HP or Torque

Borla=Increase in HP and Torque

And the noise thing is true, it does make the car sound like it should.

Gonna have to disagree with you Russ. Don't think it's fair to CORSA to say "no hp increase and no torque increase", that is, if you are referring to their newer 3" system. Dyno said differently. So my opinion after hearing them both would be:

BORLA.....louder and drones
CORSA....quieter, no drone, hp AND torque increase, and the best looking exhaust tips of any system out there bar none.

PS>>except maybe Marv S's! Ha!

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but...
Isn't it the HF Cats that actually create the HP increase, NOT the cat back portion of the exhaust system?

We did Borlas and Random Tech high flow cats. NEW Borlas don;t have a drone, per se, but a resonance that moved up the RPM range to about the 3200 RPM range - easy to shift out of while cruising. OLDER Borlas had that drone or resonance at 2000 RPMs - right where it is more annoying on road trips. Neither is even remotely noticable on the track

I htink they sound great - nice rumble to a sharper staccato note at higher RPMs.

Our initial Borla installation gave us upwards of about 17-18 HP on each 1996 GTS. Hard to quantify hi flow cat increase (maybe 3-4) because we added 1998+ tubular headers at the same time....

Corsa has made great strides - great sound AND power with the new 3" system. Probably the exhaust of choice for lesser interior noise and no issues with drone or resonance...

I would expect HP gains to be similar.

Agree, Janni. Well put. CitySnake....let me try to put it a different way. Catback systems that we are talking about mean replacing everything from the cat BACK to the rear, not the cat itself. Even without replacing the stock cat, there are hp and torque gains with catback systems because of their design and freer-flowing effects.
IF you want to replace the cats with hi-flow cats, there is a small amount to be gained as shown on several dyno tests by members, but it's not a lot. Sound changes a bit though, so keep that in mind if you are considering it. pete the ex glass guy

Thanks Pete:

I actually did change JUST the cats - left the rest of the system stock. I had several conversations with Sean Roe about this effect and his research (dyno) showed that his cats, alone,(I assume all HF cat would achieve a similar result) were responsible for most of the 12-18 hp gain resulting from a typical cat and catback replacement/upgrade. You're right about the sound. There's a definitive deepening and slight volume increase to the "stock" sound.

Interesting divergence of findings, however.

BOTTOM LINE:

Buy what you think sounds best. HP differences are going to be very little between the 3' systems. As a matter of fact, HP differences are going to be very little between Corsa 2.5 and Corsa/Borla 3.0 , unless you do some moderate mods. Dyno test I've seen show little difference between 2.5' vs. 3.0', if you only do the basic mods (Filters/tubes, Airbox, VEC-1).

CitySnake.....yes.....I too am always fascinated here by the difference in findings amongst various dynos, tuners, products, installs, etc. You gotta love it when an AIR FILTER replacement can make anywhere from 2 to 30rhwp!!!! Hi flow cats from 3 to 30rwhp, and my all-time favorite so far....the rain-baffle delete which has been shown to make anywhere from 5 to 400rwhp......lol. pete the ex glass guy
