The Motor City Viper Owners had their Leelanau Peninsula Wine Country Tour this weekend. We were flattered to have one of the new coupes join us. Of course everyone poured over it and it is an impressive car!

For those of you who have been waiting to compare its design directly with the GTS, I offer the following pictures. I'll refrain from commentary because there are such divided opinions on the topic -- I guess the safest thing I can say is that both cars have their strong points.

This close up inspection solved one of the mysteries that was bugging me -- that big bolster on top of the gas tank in the interior contains the radio speakers -- two large speakers facing forward and two tweaters firing upward!

While not perfect, the new coupe is an impressive vehicle when you get up close to it in person. :2tu:

I cant get over how stupid, ricey and out of place that gas cap looks. Also, the trunk area (the whole hatch coming up) just looks weird and thrown together. Im sure in person the coupe looks better, but I just feel DC threw the coupe together to try and shut people up about there not being a coupe. With that said, I'd take an SRT vert over the coupe. Buy a hardtop and call it a day.

I like em both but there is something (to me) more appealing about the new design. Thats why i bought a new Viper..
I still like the original though....

that coupe looks SOOOOOOOOOOO much better then the gts its unreal. :2tu:

very nice looking viper :headbang:

for the gts lovers these pics speak a thousand words. there is no way anyone
can convince me the new coupe takes a back seat to the gts, it just makes the gts
look very dated. just have a look at the rear of the two side by side, that gts
looks fugly next to it. i must admit i have never been a gts fan but man what a
difference, i will definitely have a new coupe in the future. :2tu:

That grey gts has anemic pipes, but other than that, both cars have pretty fugly butts. The rear was always my gripe with the gts. The new coupe copies it and adds some angles, making the ugly, uglier.

The vert's rear looks soooo much better. They should have welded the rear of the Firepower to the Viper. Bottom line, they all have their plus and minuses, but you can't lose with any of them. :2tu:

The coupe looks 100 times better than the GTS. The GTS looks like its butt is dragging!

This is the first thread in VCA history where somebody criticized the GTS rear.

Austin, what is so much different from the new gas cap compared to the GTS gas cap? Did you not like that one either?

Colors make a huge difference to the perception of shape, curves, shadows, and lines of a car. I would need to see a 06 coupe next to a GTS of similar color scheme. Coupe does look wonderful though.

Chuck, I agree. Rears are strong on both models, and look great to me.

Bruce--Nice post!!! Thanks!

I really like the new coupe, but I still love the GTS styling more.

To me, the best looking car is the white GTS.

The Coupe is the future.
Think it looks good but needs to be lowered about an inch. I do like angle of the rear glass though. It looks fast.
Compared to the GTS, I'm not putting mine on the block yet but ours are getting older everyday and so is their technology and the view of their dominance in the HP wars. As much as I love drive my car on the track the SRT/10 is so much nicer. So anyone who says they will never sell their GEN I or II for a GEN III, better get ready to be driving a classic. I no longer can say never.
Thanks for the Pics.

When I first saw a vert SRT, I thought the rear was the only section that was a bit bland. I think the new coupe brings alot more excitment to the rear of the car and makes it much more interesting to look at. It is designs like this that bring out the Love it or Hate it reactions.

It seems when a design is trying to satisfy everyone, it gets to be very watered down.

There is not much comparison here, the GTS is simply a cooler looking car. The one guy up there obviously hates the GTS, nothing wrong with having an opinion. Here is mine, the GTS will never look dated because it has a retro design incorporating several dated times.

Time will be the only thing to prove me wrong, no viper is revered by the general public more than the GTS, that includes the rt10, when you say viper, people think GTS. Nothing has happened to change that.....yet.

The curves are so much nicer on the GTS, the new coupe looks like an overgrown hunk of soap sitting next to a Viper. Personally, I would much rather have the srt vert, it's a much nicer looking car.

I disagree. You're forgetting the pedigree. The RT/10 is the original Viper and I would dare say is 'revered' just as much as the GTS. They each bring a different look to the table. IMO, The RT/10 is squatter and more muscular from the back. The GTS is more race designed with very nice curves in the back. Where I live there are about 10 Vipers in the entire area. 9 are RT/10s. 1 is a FE GTS (but that guy owns a RT/10 as well).

I think the new coupe will attract much more attention than the convertible SRT-10 has or will.

Most people who have owned vipers before the GTS was built think that the RT/10 is what a viper should look like. When it comes time to drive one I am getting in the SRT, when I want to cruise and scare small children I take the RT/10.

I find nothing wrong with your post, I just don't like the new coupe, maybe that will change. I don't think the gen III vert's are as cool as the previous gen's, but at least they are different. They are unique, and beautiful in a different way. This new coupe is like a frankin'viper, maybe dc is trying too hard to appeal to past viper owners. And no, the frankin'viper is not a timeless design because it incorporates different generations of viper. :p

Gen 2 Viper GTS are hard to beat in the looks department.

The new coupe is fugly in many ways but I would still LOVE to own one. I will though, wait a few years when they are around 60K or so.

Yes, I think the GTS's cap was perfect. If it would have been anywhere else, I dont think it would have looked right. I guess the new coupes cap (like the rest of the car) is just one of those things you have to see in person to appreciate. In pictures, it just looks out of place and cheap.

On a side note. Im not bashing the whole car, theres just some parts about the coupe that I dislike. I will always be a GEN I/II fan. I really like the SRT vert, it just needs a hardtop to look even better then it does.

?

You talking to ME!:)

Not sure if this was posted towards me, but about me hating my GTS. I’ve put over $25K into my GTS to make it more street/track drivable and haven’t touched the engine. So trust me I have to much money invested into my GTS to ever fall out of love.
And just between us on the Viper board, I still open the door to my garage at night when I’m locking up to get a quick grin on my face at the fact that a Dodge, GTS Viper is sitting in MY garage. And I’m 42 years old so lets keep that between us:)

He was referring to "Wanted", not you. Wanted changes his mind weekly, depending on what he just bought.
