crankshaft problem

I was in the process of removing my pistons when I accidentally scraped the crankshaft with one of the connecting rod bolts. The scrape is about 1-inch long, 1/8 inch wide and at most 1/32 inch deep.

Can I simply use a piece of emery cloth (like 600 grit) to remove the sharp edges of the scrape or do I need to remove the crank and have that journal completely reground?

Your thoughts are most appreciated!

As long as there are no raised edges to gouge the bearing, the scrape shouldn't cause a problem, think of it as a small oil reservoir.

Others will disagree.

A lot depends on the location and orientation. If it is outside of the highly loaded regions (compression and inertial loading) it may be okay. I say may as I would be skeptical based on the description of the size. How do you make that big of a mark? That would be difficult to do with a hardened file (1 inch long, 1/8 inch wide and 1/32 deept :( )

In general if you can catch your fingernail in a depression it is too large. Also, make absolutely sure that there is no raised surface. Any at all is deadly.
