does anyone know how much lower the car will be if you cut half a coil on a factory gen2 spring? i got a friend with a 97rt10 who wants to go down just half an inch or so. I know theres caps but in this case hes just cutting his coils.

anyone have any input? thanks

My input is don't do it.

When you cut a spring you introduce heat into the metal potentially changing the molecular properties of the spring. It may not perform to OEM specs once it's cut. It can also make the metal brittle and more likely to crack. I say buy a set of Eibachs. They can be found for less than $600.

Best of luck!

How about lowering the car by removing some of the pressure in the tires :eater:

funny enough... my springs are cut. The guy that had it before I did had it done back in 97, I suppose before there were lower springs for the gts. Handling seems to be fine, but I haven't driven another gen2 to compare to.. only Gen3 (but it handles better stock). If it were up to me, get some eibachs... around $350.

Cutting springs was common practice 40 years ago. Nowadays there are springs in every size and rate. Better off to just buy a set.

The springs are ground flat on the upper end (so can't cut there) and the spiral on the lower end is a tapered rate. If you cut a half coil off the bottom, only the cut edge will rest in the spring seat that is on the shock body, i.e. you will have point contact. Even if the spring seat could tolerate this in the long run, it means you have to be deadly accurate when you cut the springs to get the same effective spring rate and ride height on both sides of the car. Good luck!
