Have an 01 GTS with a dead battery. Can I charge the battery from the positive post under the hood or will this cause harm? Factory manual says to disconnect negative cable before charging so I assume I cannot. When you use a battery tender trickle charger do you have to connect to the battery directly? Thanks in advance

I'm not too sure what your manual says or where exactly your battery is, but in the GEN III there is a remote positive terminal in the engine compartment. Connect the positive terminal there and the negative terminal to any solid metal surface. Go to this link and read some of the cautions with charging a battery. As for the Battery Tender, connect it where you think it is easier for you to charge your battery. Some people connect it directly to the battery. Myself, I have mine connected under the hood. Your battery is located behind the rear driver's wheel, I believe you need 8mm, 10mm & 11mm sockets to remove the bolts and voila, you'll have full access to the battery.....I just changed mine about 45 days ago to a new Sears Diehard and swear my car runs better!

You can charge from the post, like others said. You should probably just get that old battery out of there, sounds like its going bad?

I put an Optima redtop in mine after pulling out the ***** leaky POS the previous owner had in it, and have had smooth sailing since.

Then get yourself a battery tender!!:)

If its several years old I'd replace it. I find that once our batteries die, they just can't cut it any longer, no matter how much you charge them.
