Debating a repaint

I really like the look of the anodized carbon gen V color and think it would look spectacular on my 2000 red ACR. The paint on my car could definitely use a professional detail and the side sills are a mess. Every time I keep thinking of selling and trading my car, I just don't find a good enough reason to. I know keeping the stock color is important for resale and especially on a 1 of 35 solid red ACRs in 2000. However I just love that new color on the Gen V. What would it cost to do that exact color on my gen II and are there other negatives I am not considering?

Prior to my Viper I've done a few custom color changes on previous cars, just because I wanted the car "that" color. My full custom SRT Charger was actually done in the GM Cyber Grey Metallic. It's your car, as stated above, as long as you don't put DONKS on it and paint it like Sponge Bob, have at it.

On average, a GOOD repaint, done correct, jams, etc, will run about 8k + depending on paint and clear quality. Cheap paint isn't good and good paint isn't cheap!

Thanks everyone. I was thinking around 7K so I think I am in the ballpark. I know it's a very subjective decision but it's not an easy one. It is Winter now in Michigan basically so by the time I can drive again it will be year number 6 for this vehicle. This is one of the longest streaks I have ever had with a sports car and a repaint seems like it may be a "new car" but I haven't ever done a repaint before. The paint of the current vehicle could be restored again but I am sure it will be much thinner at this point...

We (Autoform) are in Michigan...we have repainted quite a few Vipers(well over a hundred)...there are many different levels of paint work quality...from basic panel scuff...seal and repaint to complete dis-assembly of all panels, strip if necessary prime block sand paint and buff....there is Basic...Good..Great and Stunning...I'd say start at 5k and add 5k for each word.

Just get it touched up and put some Carbon color vinyl stripes on it for a change of pace, they come off early and are cheap. Or put a wrap on it. I don't think rarity means much for Viper resale and if you are regularly debating getting rid of it, you probably will someday if you can get a decent price for it. Just my 2c.

I agree with BOXER12, spending $5-$7K on "i am really not sure if i keep" car is just plain absurd

A wrap is a good way to go to see if you like it. Longevity and quality won't be as high (not as in a bad quality wrap, but compared to paint it won't have the same kind of luster). I've been thinking about a wrap just because I have a color/stripe idea I'd really like to do, but don't want to paint the car because I really like the silver it already is as well. I've heard numbers around $3k for a wrap and with quality materials maybe 5-10 years of looking good. Probably even more if you don't drive it often since sunlight is the main enemy of vinyl.

Having a new anodized carbon Gen V, I completely understand the appeal! And although I have always been a fan of customizing a vehicle, there is no way I would alter a 1 of 35 vehicle. At least as far as the color is concerned.

If you love the car and plan to keep it forever, paint it any color you like. Reading your post, however, that doesn't seem to be the case.

If your car has higher mileage (10K-50K), I would consider paintjob, since you intent to keep it.
If iot has less than 5K miles and its in pristine condition, then no.

There probably are a couple of nice originals in museums for the the world to remember what they looked like when they were new...It is just a car...it was made by people for you...the current owner to enjoy...what ever that means for you. If being a care taker of the past is fun...or you don't think you can make it look any better than it did when it it was new...I would watersand and buff what I could to bring back the original surface quality and repaint the parts that show some affects from driving and general use.

ok. I am surprised someone hasn't said this yet but the anodized carbon color looks nice but is VERY difficult to maintain. any scratches, bug etchings, or if bird droppings get on it and its there. You cant buff it out and you cant respray just one panel... it wont match. That is a very special paint and BMW and Mercedes owners who have gone with the matte paints know how hard it is to keep. You can get a vinyl wrap done that will look the same... in fact they have numerous colors in matte finish and vinyl is much easier to keep. I have my Jeep SRT-8 wrapped in a metallic blue with a matte finish and it looks amazing. Plus its easy to keep and when I want to go back to the factory color it peels off. That would be my recommendation. The other option is to paint it a glossy color and wrap it with matte finish paint protection film like Suntek. The film is self healing so scratches and bug etchings heal themselves.
