Hello again all.

As all you forum veterans well know by now, for quite some time I have been in search of a nice (read: cheap running) Viper to inhabit my driveway. I have very limited financial resources and I have burned my patience thin during this search, but I have finally limited myself to three viable choices. Since I'm playing a gamble on this anyway with a less than 50/50 chance of getting anything, I figured it couldn't hurt to get some off the hip opinions on which direction I should take. All three of these cars fit my criteria of being 1) Cheap, 2) well running, 3) Owned by people I trust. (Since all three belong to people who frequent the board I ask those them to refrain from identifying themselves to help keep responses unbiased.) Yes I realize the true locals here will recognize these cars in a heartbeat.

Here are my options:
1994 Black RT - This is my current choice, but it has really high miles. Almost everything on the car has be refreshed and conditioned and the motor was replaced under warranty about 15k miles ago. I trust the owner and the car and it is square in my price range, but I have concerns whether the vehicle will survive another 100k miles with my kind of driving. Also, for some really odd reason, the insurance is higher on this vehicle (for me) than the next.

1996 White RT - I am somehow continuously drawn to this car despite the fact that it is the only one of the three I have yet to see in person. Again I trust the owner and car but it has the highest mileage on the motor. The pros: 96 is my favorite year, white is my favorite colour, and I'd have the only 1996 (or white) Viper in my state. The fact that its going for over $10k more than the other two and its mileage are the only cons I can think of.

1997 Blue GTS - The wildcard. This is a wrecked GTS with broadside damage to the passenger side. The benefit with this wreck is that with the lowest price tag here I also get all the extra parts (including used hood, used door, and new exhaust, not to mention quite a few other goodies) plus I get a newer, more sought after car as a whole. The pros with this car are: it is a GTS!, my Gfriend would greatly prefer the hardtop, I'll have cash left over for go-fast stuff, and I wouldn't be scared to death about scratches or high miles. The cons: Well it IS wrecked, I didn't get the chance to fully examine the damage yet so the possibility of added/unknown repair costs is very real, it is a GTS, and did I mention it was wrecked. Oh and I forgot to mention by the time I got this one the road my insurance and my DMV point-standing will be much lower.

If anyone else has a Viper for sale under $30k (I guess I should give up that hard liquor huh) please drop me a line. As always, Any thoughts or criticisms will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Apparently more than 15k though, the mileage on the 1st one

Without a complete inspect, I'd forgo the last one.

Miles Respectively:
94 - (well, well above 15k on rest of car) but 15K on new motor.
96 - 30k - 35k right MM?
97 - 19K

MM - If you're driving is anything like your posting I'd be willing to bet she's got some wear on her.

Slaughter - I plan on inspecting before buying. The car came through my area on a flatbed and the new owner started her up for me. It was going to be a race car project, but he emailed me a few weeks ago and said he'd sell her to me for $25k complete with parts he's gathered. If my extremely poor memory serves me for once I don't remember significant (read: frame) damage just a lot of glass, hood, and body damage.

If that GenII is close to the price of a GenI, grab that GenII. RT/10 or GTS, you'll love both just as much.. You really can't compare a GenII GTS to a GenI RT/10. And you said parts are included on the GTS?? I'd jump on that one.

Bonkers, I wouldn't recommend getting a junk Viper to save some cash because it will end up getting your money in the end. Remember that Vipers aren't cheap to fix and that a clunker Viper would be a NIGHTMARE. Also I don't think there is a big market for Viper buyers looking for a "cheap" car. Most want something that has a clean past, so you might have an even harder time getting rid of the car when the time comes to sell. Just something to think about.

Seriously, do what ya need to do. Mine isn't a project.. and it sounds like your wanting a project. If your going to buy a wreck, go for a gen2 car.

Gerald - Yes he said the "only" thing he hasn't collected yet was a windsheild. He has the hood, the complete door, a new exhaust, new side sill, new seats, new dash, and new rug. My thinking is that if I got a complete car then I would just have to spend the elbow grease to get it back together. I have a feeling there might be frame damage, but even so would straitening a frame cost more than $13k?

JF - No flame, but the market for a cheap Viper is intense. Even the wrecks sell very quickly at cheap prices and wholesalers monopolize the market. In fact I was just talking with another member about how he gave up on his demolished GTS only to have me discover it later on a wholesaler's website at a $20k premium. It sold at the asked price too. I've been trying to get hold of the ViperDays racers to see if they'd be willing to sell their wrecks, but it seems even those cars are already accounted for. There was even a GTS on ebay a while back with no motor, no transmission, no rims, no glass and 50% of the interior that sold for $26k.

I guess my concerns are with the worth of the car, not the monetary value, especially considering I would probably never sell the car unless ABSOLUTELY necessary. Would a high miles GenI last long enough to create good Grandchild stories ("Grandpa did you really own a Viper once??") especially considering that I tend to run cars very fast for very long? Is a 96 with half the miles really be worth $9-13k more just because it had no issues and is the most likable colour? Is a broken GTS just not worth skinned knuckles and burned elbows even if it is streetable in the end? The thing that kills is that I might not have another good chance for a car for several years. After (literally) six years of torment I have a one shot chance of getting this right so I don't want to screw it up.

Oh, another thing, does anyone know who drove Number 97 in past ViperDays Challenges? Seems this car provided a lot of the donor parts for the GTS....

Chuck - Thanks. Maybe someday I'll be rich, have two vipers, and be able to scrap clean my colon with my nose too...

Personally I would go for the GTS - simply because I like GTS's. Like Gerald, I feel the GTS is an all around better car - alot more "sorted out". Now, this one is wrecked... so that could affect things.

I would say have the GTS checked out. If it truly is complete with parts, it should easily be worth $25k. But get it checked so you know the extent of additional damages.

If the GTS falls through, I would probably go for the white car. I dunno how much more it is than the other RT, but to me, a 100k car with a 15k engine is still a 100k car. I would hate to think of the car becoming worn (i.e. seats wearing, interior getting shabby, car is as loose as any 100k car would be) but a nice strong motor - sort of like a pretty girl with a big scar - if ya know what I mean
smile.gif

It comes down to personal preference... for me, I'd go with the GTS. You know that you can sell that car for what you paid + a bit of extra for your trouble if it comes down to that. Any of the other cars will likely cause you a depreciation hit when you sell - the GTS likely won't for several years, and down the line, if you DO keep it long LONG term, the GTS IMO will be the more desirable car.

Hey Bonkers, it sounds to me like you have answered your own question

Go for the one you are "continuously drawn to". Of course, first check it out in person, but if this is the one you seem to keep finding yourself wanting...then that is the one you should have...that's simple...right??
laugh.gif
You want white, you will have the only white Viper in your state, the value will always be there, due to it's limited availability. Sounds like the car for you
smile.gif

Personally, unless I absolutely had to, I wouldn't go for a refurbished, or a wreck. Just my opinion.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
Don't worry about what the GF wants either, get what you want.

Yes yes! To the viperess you must listen! Wise she is.. help you she can!

Also remember... I may have "higher" milage, but my interior is mint and the car is ROCK solid. No gasket problems, no nothing.

Get what ya want man, i'll be here if you decide otherwise

Look at it this way, you have 1 month before VOI-7. If you
get the do-it-yourselfer, you would have to have an old
fashion 'barn raising' - you supply the beer(or whatever) and
invite some of the VCA members over(bring your own wrenches).
***You might want to put some members on a block list.

See MM, thats why I didn't want you to ID yourself(s), you have a distinct advantage because you bask in the good graces of the Viperess. Now if anyone suggests the remaining two they'll live in fear of her terrible wraith.

Woe is me....

wait, wait, wait...I didn't know that was MM's car, honestly

my response was simply based on what you originally wrote, which sounded to me, like that was the car you really wanted. I just believe in getting what you want, whenever it is possible, because life is too short not too

once again, good luck with whatever you decide!

higher milage isn't always a bad thing, could be a good thing.a car that is driven on a regular basis keeps everything lubed and in working order, the worst thing for a car is to not drive it.BTW i'd trust MM on this board,i don't think he'd steer you wrong and risk his reputation.

I agree with Gerald regarding the Gen II. Having owned both, I'd suggest buying the Gen II if you are looking for a project. I'd be less concerned with the milage!!
