"popping" in the exhaust is NOT detonation. Is it happening at certain RPMs in deacceleration? If so, it's normal, not to worry. Just a little added "bonus". Detonation in the engine sounds like you have some marbles being shook back and forth in the valve covers.. NOT a GOOD THING.

WHOA!! you need to change your plugs. My experience is to change them every 5k. Keeps the car running like new. Vipers eat the stock Champion plugs very quickly. Like Gerald said is it under deceleration. If it is under acceleration try the plugs first.

Doug, did you recommend changing his wires because he's having a problem, or do you think it's a good idea to change them as a matter of practice? I had been thinking about picking up a set of Magnecor's because I like the red wires, but hadn't yet because I couldn't convince myself there was any real functional advantage.

And on the plugs, do you also recommend changing those from stock, or changing them every so often even if you're not having a problem? Thanks!

It's good practice to keep a log book with service records for preventative and future reference. Just simple stuff like oil changes, belt(s), hoses, wires, plugs etc....
A properly tuned engine provides great performance and durability, not to mention better fuel consumption. Sometimes by keeping records helps answer some questions regarding performance issues. For example, a car with 19,000 miles experiencing problematic symptoms should have already had the ignitions wires replaced at least once (in my professional opinion) as well as the spark plugs twice. Referencing your log book would rule out some of the causes of your problems

.

It's not necessarily the mileage but the age and heat that effects these components too.

I'd love to help you but I have some prior obligations that need attention first. Feel free to contact me in the VERY near future and hopefully we can get together. I'll be looking forward to meeting you!

I just have to make a small point that It's not my intentions to solicit business by offering advise. I'm a Viper owner too!
