I am considering buying one of these years... can someone please list all of the changes and "standards" that different years got? Such as ABS, "CreamPuff" Vs. "Muscle Vipers", interior changes, etc? Thanks all!
airbag switch, different wheels, interior trim, foglight covers, cam profile, headers, engine managment for emissions.glove box locks, abs, remote mirrors, colors .i know i missed some but this can start you out.my 2000 does not have the lumpy cam my 96 has but the 2000 is much smoother of a car.i wont pick my favorite because there all killer cars regardless of options ect.
how about the 96-97 GTS engine Vs. the 98+? I know the 98+ runs smoother, but how are they as far as response to upgrades, etc? is the amount of power the stock engine can handle increased or decreased in 98+? I also heard a rumor that 96-97 had weaker rods, but stronger pistons, and 98+ has weaker pistons but stronger rods... is this true or not? how much power can each handle in stock form? Thanks!

There is a lot of misinformation out there, where did you find this out? I own both a 97 and a 98. I drive both of them regularly. There is no difference in the idle.
the viperclub website marv s mentioned is awesome though a couple things are missing. i created another page to complement it with a few observations folded in, i updated tonight with a couple more things. it is about my 5th or 6th revision. hope this helps. see: http://viper.thomasser.org/viper
Looks like a lot of people like the 98's so why dont you just buy mine?? 4280 miles, extenmded warranty till 2006 and looking for a new home...$58,500 Good luck in your search for whatever viper you buy!
GTSREDDOG-Sorry, I will not be in the market for one until later this spring or early summer...but if yours is still available, I would DEFINATLY consider it.
Well, looking over the records, I think that a 98-99 would be the best year for me in the GTS. But, I really want ABS... is it possible to add it? I know it wont be cost affective... but has it been done before? I mean, I wont die or anything is I dont have it, but could it be done? Also, was there any interior changes between 99 ans 01?
I have had a '98 and and now have an '01. Power was identical. I love the ABS and adding ABS to an older car is pretty much prohibitive. You also get 18" wheels with the '99-up cars. The new car is smoother and I miss the rough idle, but the '01 is definitely faster on track due to ABS nd more rear brake bias (new rear caliper is used on ABS-equipped cars). I will bet you can buy a new Viper cheap right now given the inventory dealers are carrying and I do prefer my '01 over my '98 overall.

Virtually ALL the assumptions above are false.
Except one.
The more aggressive cam and ECU of 96-97 yielded a few more HP, and a few more HP still under certain mods, when measured vs. 98-99 and again vs 2000+.

Negligible Jon. This comes from an owner owning of both 98 and 97 simultaneously.
Besides, 4 or 5 hp difference can be measured between two identical model year cars. The 98 with the stronger wheels, alarm switch, etc. is the better Viper.
Color choice is the only reason for choosing pre-98.
