JonB,

A while back you made a comment stating that the Dip Stick on a Viper showed full when it was actually two quarts low. What’s the scoop?....or was I dreaming?

Wilddude,
Here is what I found for my 1996 RT/10 (same as yours):
1996 RT/10 OWNERS MANUAL: 9.5 Qts. With Filter
1996 RT/10 SERVICE MANUAL: 10.0 Qts. With Filter.
Either way, the dip stick will show OVER full. I have checked a few other Gen 1 cars, and they also show OVER full. The dip stick might have been borrowed from a Dodge Neon, or some such thing.

The owner's manual I think lists the oil capacity not how much to put in when you do an oil change. All of the oil doesnt drain, the oil cooler holds oil ( I think 2 qts) and that doesnt drain from the oil pan. I could be wrong so we can wait and see what someone more experienced has to say.

What I said was,

"when the Viper's dipstick shows "ADD" it is TWO quarts low."

Historically, every other car you've owned that had an ADD mark showd 1 QT low. By the Time Viper hits ADD you are Two Too Low

I just drained the oil out of the car... I had bought two 5 quart
jugs of oil to put back in... when I filled the car I was very
careful about getting the oil to the full mark on the stick...

There was oil still left in the second jug... don't know how much
but enough that I saved it for topping off later when needed...

So I know that if didn't take the full 10 quarts to fill the engine.

I suspect the oil cooler and lines had the rest of the oil that
was not accounted for.

Dixter,
Does a 1997 use 10 quarts or 8.5?

Randall,
The problem is my dipstick is too LONG. It bottoms out and the full mark is still hanging out of the hole!

JonB,
Thanks for the update.

On the Gen 1 cars there was a service bulletin on the dip stick and tube calling for replacement due to the wrong one being installed with incorrect readings. Mine was showing I was burning oil at the rate of a quart every 200 to 500 miles on a new Arrow
Rebuild.

In reality it was a quart every 3000 miles with the proper tube and stick.

Tin,
Do you have any particulars on that service bulletin?? Such as Number; is it a recall item or warranty item ??
Thanks,
Later,
