Does ADDING stripes hurt the value?

Sorry for what may be a dumb question, but I'm in the market for an '08 coupe with stripes. I've found a solid red car that matches what I'm looking for except for lacking stripes. I'm thankful to live near Prefix and will actually be there next Friday for a tour. Since they do the stripes on all new Vipers, I'm considering asking them to add white stripes to this car.

I believe I will personally enjoy the car more which is what its all about, but do any of you feel that adding stripes to a 5 year old car could hurt its value or make it less desirable down the road?

Thanks,
John

My guess is that if Prefix does it the value should be unchanged since they were the ones who put stripes on all the Vipers anyway. Although, I'm sure you'll find some anal retentive purist who will say otherwise.

I added stripes to a 2008 I had because it is what I wanted. I was able to sell it for fair market value.

White stripes on red is a common combination so I'm sure you'll have no trouble selling it. Now, if you were putting purple stripes on the car, different story. If the car is a match with the exception of stripes, I say go for it!

BTW, I had additional clear coat added on top of my 2008 in order to make the stripes smooth....something to consider.

IMHO, there aren't too many people out there who would shy away from a coupe with stripes, factory or not. Roadster is a different story. The stripes are an iconic feature and I if you will enjoy it more, don't even think about not doing it. Last thought, if you don't want to regret it come sale time, just do vinyl...

Personally I don't see why it would but then I'm a stripe guy, like you I believe. Let's look at it like this: I'm looking at two Viper equal in everything but stripes. If I want the stripes I'm going to choose the one with stripes, factory original or not (assuming it was applied in a quality manner) and I'll even pay more for the one with the stripes. Now let's look at two equal Vipers with stripes, one of them not factory original but equal in quality. Are you going to pay more for the one that had the stripes on the sticker? What if the one that wasn't factory original but looked a little better than the factory one? Which would you choose? Would you rather a non-stripe factory original over a striped one that wasn't factory original? Obviously not so get the stripes put on. Otherwise look around some more or wait until a factory stripe car shows up - it won't be long. I wouldn't look twice at my Viper if it weren't for the blue stripes.

yes it absolutely does hurt the value...when you say "matches what Im looking for" you mean price? . Since stripes seems to be what your "really" looking for. :)

My view is.. either you pay a little above market today to get the perfect color combo car, or you by it below market, and sell it below market when the time comes. works out about the same. Vipers have always been very value sensitive to color combo. A solid red car is a tough car to move. Don't shoot the messanger. just the way it is.

You will not regret the sripes! (they will be factory if done by Prefix)
Silver or White will light it up! Enjoy the extra attention your Viper gets on the street.

Personally, I really like the red/white stripe combo and they are limited. Go for it, you may expand future buyer pool. Enjoy it now. BTW, my striped coupe talks to me when I drive it and the words are...... Let's go fast. My vert without stripes says... Let's cruise.

Stripes, unless done in Dolphin Viper style, won't hurt the value of your Viper. Go for it, enjoy it.

I would think not if stripes are close to factory specs...nothing custom. Added silver stripes to my 06. Dodge dealer where I bought car, did the work. Took 2 weeks. They brought in another 06 to match the dimensions from front to back. I wanted the stripes to be factory dimensions for the 06 model. They dismantle the body and painted in sections. There is no lip between stripes and body.

Having trouble adding before/after pics.

Its your car do with it what you want. I am a non strip guy and prefer a solid color car. You will affect the value of your car no mater who puts the strips on. If you are buying the car to sell and not drive and keep. Do not put the strips on. If you are buying it to drive and keep strip it. But remember when if you do ANY paint work on the car it will lower the value. I just bought my 08 and looked for a long time to find me car. I looked at many cars and any that were not exactly what the factory specs said they were I walked away from. When people buy cars in our price range they will inspect it good. And if they see paint work done the will automatically think its been hit and will not want to buy it. Auto check and car fax don't catch everything and people buying nice cars know that. If you do put strips on take before and after pics and also during pics. Save all the paperwork from the place that puts the strips on. Sorry for the long response just want you to make the right decision for you. Good luck

Vipers with stripes also have blacked out diffuser area on the bumper. If you are worried about losing value, do it in vinyl, this way no worries about the car not bing correct later on.

I had Prefix add stripes to my '09. They gave me a choice of stripes and whether to paint the diffuser black. I went with the factory look.

Thanks guys. Went on the Prefix tour yesterday and have an even better appreciation for their quality. They offer all sorts of options, including painting the diffuser black and doing everything to exact factory specs. If done, I will choose that option. Eric Foster handled our tour for the Motor City group and was fantastic. I will exchange email w/ him this week regarding details, logistics, pricing.
Thanks, John
