Does every V8 have something to prove?

Driving to work this morning and some guy in a Mustang with a exhaust and some a-piller gauges kept reving the engine, spinning the tires. So the road opens up enough i can get next to him, and before i could even do it, he takes off. i dont even bother, i get up next to him again in traffic and hes back to reving the engine. i was like seriously dude? hes in a 2008-09ish GT mustang, which are not horribly fast..

what a ******.

Remember, the Viper is the benchmark to which most other muscle cars set their sights on. When they see a Mustang, Camaro, Corvette, etc, those cars may or may not be quick. But when they see us, they know we all have power and it is more than most of them so to those with more testosterone than brains, thats an automatic "go" switch.
Second, you do need to watch out for the Mustangs. It takes very little for those cars to achieve at least similar performance as the Viper. Many of them have more than 700HP cruising around. They can achieve it far cheaper than we can. Thats the appeal to the younger crowd.

o i know, i used to street race back in the day. A good indication of how serious a car is you can useally get by the rear tire choice this guy was running the stock rubber. Even if its making 700hp, its gonna do nothing but spin. Now a guy on a set of big fat Nitto street drags, i might worry a bit. but it just makes me laugh. Viper is NOT a drag car, why do they think i want to race stop light to stop light?

You forgot to mention pontiac grand ams, pick-up trucks, and mini vans. Have had the same thing from all of those. I actually lump stangs in that same category, to be ignored.

Really, the only group that has never done that to me are corvettes. I guess they are more aware than the others.

A good indication if you may or may not have trouble, is if the guy is not reving his engine, etc. beside you but is just sitting there and car/truck is rocking back and forth with the idle lump of the cam. If that is the case, it is better to just tip your hat and let them go Slowly walk off the line like nothing is even going on. You would be surprised what you can get embarrased by these days. It's never happened to me, but I have heard stories. :)

BTW Be happen there are Mustang owners or car enthusists out there enough to want to feel the excitment, etc. In the end, the Mustang owner just wants to see the Viper perform. They know they can not beat you. You should just view it as a complement and move on. What have you got to prove to anyone, you are in a Viper already. Why even waste your time trying to get up next to him? Bashing this car or that, I don't understand it. Either we are car guys or not. At one time, we were all young drivers with aspirations for better vehicles later in life. Probably just a young driver with a new license. Just smile and go on with life.

traffic was slow, not like i was blasting up trying to get up next to him. i just cruised along really ignoring the guy for the most part, dont think the car ever went above 2500rpm. really i wanted to get up next to him just to see his age.

MoparBoyy sorry to hijack this, and this is not personal in any way, but looking at the above pic I can't help but be reminded of "Lance":

Oh Lance!:rolaugh:

Yes, everyone will try to beat you....

Two years ago was sitting at a light. Vette beside me. Revving. Light changes and he launches. Had yet to see the cop sitting in the gas station on the other side of the intersection watching us! :rolaugh:

The Lance thread was very funny. This thread could easily be the same. You own a Viper, you think people aren't going to mess with you?

I was actually really surprised when I went to Dyno-day last spring in Atlanta. There were a TON of hopped up Mustangs. Pretty much all of them had upgraded superchargers or had gone with a turbo. It was mix of the Terminator Cobras and some new model stuff. I was waiting to see some huge numbers put up after the work that been done on them. It really surprised me that only 3 of them put over 500 to the wheels. One was the shop car that was close to 900, but it was pretty much a full on race car. The other 2 put down low 700's and mid 500's.

When I first got there and saw all the work they had done, I was thinking I might be one of the slowest cars there, but ended up with the 4th highest dyno out of all the cars (FI or NA).

never underestimate another car or driver. it could easily be someone with a TON of experience in it.

im the first to admit, a highly experienced driver in a stockish mustang would likely beat me on a 1/4 mile track in a stock viper. not to mention there a re a lot of high powered mustangs around with guys that race them all the time.

for comparison since i dont know...my one and only run on a track, stockish viper was 12.0 @120. whats a stockish stang run ?

I'm with Coloviper. Take it as a compliment because alot of the times the "kid" just wants to see a Viper @ full throttle. I never listen to talk about someone taking someone else in a street race because you never know how serious the other really is, not to mention the safety issues. Me, take it to the track every time.

You are right about that... Probably, by far, the strangest attention getting revving dealt to me was by a Virginia Beach fire truck! He was beside me in stop and go traffic so I didnt pay much attention at first to his engine revving. Then I noticed he was revving up that big diesel but not moving. I looked up into the crew compartment and they were all smiling and giving me a thumbs up so I revved the Viper for them.

Had it happen on the way home from work today, a guy in an Audi TT pulls up beside me and just sits there, I'm in the far right lane just cruising along at 70, he never made eye contact but just stayed beside me for about a mile or so and then slowly pulled away from me. I was still at 70 when he pulled off, I don't feel I have anything to prove, but it was interesting. Had a Honda Civic with the muffler on it that was half the size of the car launch as I went by, still at 70, he didn't stay in it long and once I was back up beside him, he and his GF just looked over and gave the "thumbs up" what a strange drive home from work.

I think the first 4 months I drove the GTS to work I had people trying to mess with me. A stock 5.7L GTO consistently wanted to play on the interstate. I have yet to have anyone try to mess with me at a stop light. On the highway, people always seem to want a piece. Just a few weeks ago I had a GT-R decide it'd be cool to pass me going 100+. I have to behave in a car as memorable as a GTS. If ANYONE sees you breaking the law, EVERYONE will know about it. Now I just ask people to show me timeslips... haven't had anyone show me an 11 second timeslip of their car in regular daily driver trim.

"half the size of the car " - HA!!! That kills me every time I see it. I agree with you - I have NOTHING to prove. Just another day in the Snake. Still get a kick out of the thumbs-up I get out on the road.
That NEVER gets old.

LOL! Just last week I had a couple young guys (grins and thumbs-ups) in a rusted out pickup with a crooked bumper... I thought it was Sanford and Son! :omg: I played with them a little bit on the highway before pulling away and I really think it made their day.
I love when guys appreciate a great car. :)

I'd love to mess with your Vipers in my friend's Noble M400 [ doesn't even have a V-8 :rolaugh:] but the problem is , you're going 40 kms+ [ 25mph]
over the posted limits and the popo would seize the car for a while and add a host of other charges .
Don't under estimate Mustangs. You never know what's under their hood. There are quite few in my town that I know not trying to go against. :drive:
