So I'm still reading that book about WW2 aircraft engines.

It says that the air scoop assembly on the bottom of a P51 Mustang took in cold air and used it to cool the oil, engine coolant and supercharger air.

This scoop was designed so well that the air coming in expanded while cooling the liquids and went out the back at a much higher velocity than when it came in.

They said that the thrust developed by that outgoing air overcame the drag of the scoop assembly.
They said that at high altitude it might have been providing more thrust than drag.

How about that?

Nothing to do with Vipair but still a good scoop story.

Well, that's a given.

There were other things in the book that were interesting.
One was the use of the engine exhaust to provide thrust. I wouldn't have thought that there would be much to gain there but apparently they wanted all they could get.

It made me wonder if the big rail dragsters get downforce on the rear wheels by aiming the stacks up as they do.

AJT...great minds think alike   (and have the best taste in model and color)

Red IS the fastest color and prefered by 9 out of 10 beautiful women (the one that didn't vote for it was a blonde and didn't understand the question)

I've got a car but it's raining and 38 degrees out so I guess I'll just go home and put another coat of Zaino on, pop 2 or 14 cold beers and remember the drives I took this summer.
