I’m wondering what the occurrence of paint cracks and/or bubbles on Gen I painted body parts is – hoods in particular? My snake has a small number small half moon shaped cracks mostly on the passenger’s side of the hood toward the firewall. Looks like finger nail clippings.

These cracks are about ½ inch to maybe an inch in length. After reading numerous posts, it seems to me that maybe this is more common than not. I’ve been told that these cracks are common on Gen I hoods as a result of heat and the flexing of the hood during high torque maneuvers. Any thoughts?

My '94 has what I would call worm tracks. At first it looked like random direction valleys in the paint. Now the crack is in the paint, deep enough to show some white in the bottom, some longer than a fingernail clipping, but none wider than a fine point pen line. Only in the hood, toward the cowl mostly. And mine is green, too.

I had them as well. It is shrinkage of the filler used when they finished the hoods. I had them refilled and hood repainted when the car was about 5 years old. They came back 2 years later. To eliminate them entirely I believe you would have to refinish the hood and remove all of the filler material and find a better filler. Ugh!

This was a problem on a number of Gen I cars. My red 94 developed the cracks from the filler as Ron mentioned. Dodge repainted the hood under warranty around 95. They also said they would do it only once under warranty. It came out looking good but I sold the car when I got my 96 GTS so I can't tell you how long is stayed that way.
