Don\'t know what I should do, buy now or wait it out

I know we only live once. However, I have a few goals. This viper is going to be a keeper. It is a car that will be modded and driven on weekends, and for special events. I will have this car for quite some time. I keep going between gen2 and gen3 and now am beginning to debate gen 4.

here are my thoughts on what I am comtemplating thus far. The Gen 2 looks beautiful. But it is showing its age interior wise, its performance and refinement are less than the Gen3, but it has already depreciated and I don't know if the price to performance difference between gen 2 gts vs gen 3 coupe is worth the difference.

The gen 3 coupe is the only gen 3 I am interested in atm. I am a coupe fan and the new coupe is amazing. As many of you may remember I got to drive one about 3 months ago by my home for about 10 minutes. It is everything I am looking for execpt for the fact that I feel that DC did not really step up to the plate in regards to the C6 Z06. I would take this car over the Z anyday, however I don't really have the money to get this car, drive it for a year, sell it for a loss and then upgrade to another Viper.

Should I buy the Gen3 and mod it, wait to see what is in store, or what?! I really am not one to wait it out, but this is a big purchase, I am relatively young (26) and have the money to "comfortably" pull this off, but not enough to play the buy and sell game that many on here can afford to do. I want this car to mod, to look beautfiful and to be a part of my family for a very long time.

Long read but I am trying to give where I am at in my decision making process. Thanks all.

Why wait life is short. Every new model is always the latest and greatest and yes the SRT10 is not as fast as the new Vette but its close. Its still a great car and glad I bought mine 3 months ago.

More than likely, the Gen-4, IF THERE IS ONE, is one of two things:

1. Far off in the future
2. Limited to a HP/Driveline change

A driveline change could be for the better OR worse. If a Viper comes out with a V-8, you'll kick yourself. If it comes out with a modded version of the current engine... Um, why wait? Just mod it now the way YOU want and call it a day. Again, you'll kick yourself. Remember, the previous Viper held its body style for over 10 years... I would not expect a change soon- Maybe options, but thats it. Horsepower is directly proportionate to the thickness of your wallet however.

As in all collectable/enthusist cars the rule has always been...buy the best that you can afford.

Modding a car is a never ending quest for improvements. You end up with a car that is just like you want, but the expenses are unrecoverable.

I would tend to buy a new Coupe. You would have the latest, fastest, best handling/braking, and they are fantastic looking. Fresh warranty, and drive with pride.

Second choice would to try to find a older car that is modified the way you want. Best financial deal, but already driven by someone else, and you will never know for sure if the modifications are for you.

Waiting for the next generation simply puts you back in the "no Viper" game, as there will always be a next generation to wait for.

Best of success which ever you choose.

Buy the new coupe now. Add 3.55's for about 1k and beat the Vette.

Anything else you add is just gravy.

Not sure what you should do, but I do know that waiting for a rumour is a bad idea.

how much of a difference do the 3.55 make and does it throw off the speedo?

Sounds to me like you know you shouldn't get the car but you want someone to talk you into it.

Life is short?
The guy is 26

Buy the gen 3 and mod it as needed.
In 5 years time trade up to a gen 4
This way the fun never ends

Albinonile.

The gear change to 3.55s or 3.73s is a fine, as the new cars are run off the electronic speed sensor , so no sweat. Unlike the Gen IIs , you do not need a speedometer recalibration kit.

Hope this helps?

Since you do not mention taking the car to the track, what sort of mods will you doing?

If your plans involve "making the car exhaust note louder" you might want to stick with the Gen II because of its rear exhaust. The side exhaust of the Gen III can be made unbearably loud which is fine if you are tracking the car and you are wearing a helmet.

Bottom line though is this (and these other guys aren't letting in on this!) once you get a Viper and if you are truly hooked you will want MORE than one of them...then it just becomes a matter of which order to get them rather than "this or that".

For those curious I started with a Gen III 'vert and have a Gen II ACR picked out for the track (keeping both), later I'm thinking of adding a Gen III coupe and then Gen I or II RT/10, the list goes on and on...

enjoy the ride!

Part of the problem is that you are only 26 (I wish I was! I'm 50 now). I used to think like you: This is going to be a keeper......and two years later if not earlier I'm looking again for a replacement on a car that's great and in cherry condition but the latest and greatest is too much of a distraction and an itch that gets worse until satisfied. I've repeated this cycle three times already and many other much more! No, I'm not rich. I still think my current ride is the top of the mountain because unless I get rich, I'm not going to have a leisurely and elegant retirement if I keep throwing money like this! My earlier vehicles, as good as they were, there was always something(s) not quite right for me. This ride pushes ALL of my buttons well. I don't think Gen IV will entice my out of this one unless I have a ton of money to burn.

Life can be short, even at 26, but you are very unusually fortunate to be able to afford a machine like this at your age. Most guys can't even think about it until they're 40 or so if they haven't ruined their lives already. If this coupe pushed all of your buttons, go for it. Your hormones are still in high gear (and judgement still needing further refinement) so don't get into serious trouble with this monster!

Plus, you may not like the Gen IV when it comes out or it will be too expensive. Wait until you can get a great deal (BIG discount) on this coupe.

Live now, Pay later :)

Someone was selling a Sapphire 2001 GTS on the forum the other day. Great car, great color, and ABS. Get that and drive it for a year or two, by then the coupes will have come down and the Gen IV will be in the works. But be careful, You’ll feel like a rock star in the GTS and may never want to sell it. That my situation. I’d buy an SRT in a heart beat if I had the space for another Viper.

Re: Don\'t know what I should do, buy now or wait it out

i know ur a coup guy but going for the convertible i think is the best option. get a used one where someone else already suffered the drop in value and the car is more affordable. An 04' or 05' with low miles. With an extra $1500, you can get a 7 year/50k mile warranty for it if you want. it has the look and performance of a coupe but is much more affordable. in two years if u sell it u will lose a minimal amount of money compared to buying a new coupe. i'm 22 and i bought my 04' srt 10 two months ago for about 68k out the door and no regrets so far :2tu:
