This may be a stupid question but is it safe to drive GTS without the rear muffler assembly/tip? I am most concerned with hot exahust gas melting something under neath the trunk area?

Not sure why you would want to drive without something in the back unless you are "between" systems and are having a side exhaust or something done. That said, there is a heat shield where that rear muffler assembly is located. I would still worry about exhaust soot and even fumes in the cockpit. Heck, buy an inexpensive bypass with tips as an interim solution. Something like these:

Let us know what you are doing, as it sounds interesting!

I drove my RT-10 for a couple weeks without the muffler. Didn't do any harm. The reason? I thought the sound would be extreme....wrong. The muffler section does 1/10th the muffling, the resonators in the sills do 90%. Took me a while to figure it out.

You should be concerned. Although if you are just taking the rear muffler out, that would leave the exhaust coming out where the heat shield is. So you maybe alright. I personally wouldn't run it that way for a couple reasons. First the chance of melting something and second it would be *** as hell!
Why are you asking?

Thanks for the replies.

Sorry for the confusion, what I meant was removing the muffler and not replacing it with a pipe. I am having custom pipe fabricated and wanted to know if I could perhaps check out the sound before going without a muffler set up on my Borla.
