Disapointment comes in all shapes and sizes

I got the car to the shop after a 30 minute drive and pulled her on the dyno with zero kool down time..

very disapointing result!!!!!!!

Waited 30 minutes to let her kool down with a sad look on my face the hole time and then let her hit the dyno again on a kooler engine..

I was surprised to see that just a 30 minute kool down resulted in a 30 rwhp and 40 rwt increase!

but never the less the numbers were still shy of my 500 rwhp goal..

We then decided that hey..If the car can pick up 30 rwhp and 40 rwt from just a 30 minute kool down then imagine an hour..So we let her sit on the dyno for an hour and twenty minutes to kool down..

unfortunetly during this hour and twenty minute kool down I had the bright idea of resetting my pcm to delete some codes that were giving me a check engine light

the hour and twenty minute eclipsed and the 10-20 more rwhp I was expecting on the now super kooled engine was never realized..the car pulled 4 less whp than it did on the 30 minute kool down pass...

So Im disapointed in the dumb mistake of resetting the codes on the pcm...but im gonna add a throttle body and go again and next time I wont make that mistake..

Video up shortly

In short if you dont feel like watching the vids

first pull off a hot engine 445/471 sae smoothed to 3
second pull after 35 minute kool down 476/512 sae smoothed to 3
second pull converted to STANDARD instead of SAE smoothed to 1 was 491/529
Third pull after hour and twenty minute kool down a disapointing 471/510 SAE smoothed to 3

We were all expecting around 490 PLUS rwhp sae on the third pull with the extended kool down but a last minute decision to flash the pcm and erase some dtc codes before the third pulled crushed those dreams

So my first pull was a very disapointing 445/470 SAE on the hot engine straight off the freeway and on the dyno. my second pull on the 30 minute kooled engine was 476/512 SAE with a smoothing of 3..

watch it here (you can see how disapointed I was with the 445/470 first pull by my voice)

YouTube - srt10 viper dyno.MP4

This is what she put down on the dyno jet standard

491/529 most people would say this is what they hit..but i honestly only care about SAE numbers as they are the truest rwhp

491/529 "standard" vid

heres after all the runs were completed and me checking out the graphs...

YouTube - srt10 dyno vid (2003).MP4

ill get it all right next time I guess

These are very good numbers for a stock engine with bolt ons. Did they data-log air fuel and listen for knock on the dyno? Could be some power left on the table.

Im still gonna do headers and throttle body and Then send Viper Specialty the dyno results with air fuel charts and let them retune my sct as he see's apropriate...

I think those are good numbers, much better than most vehicles on the road! Be happy man, you got a Viper! And it's fast!

the craziest thing on that list, is that the guy in 1st place was on a dyno dynamics. i wonder what kinda numbers he would throw down on a mustang. he must have a factory freak.

Man I dont want to be a kill joy here but I have most every bolt on performance part made for the Viper and its tuned. I am at 492/517

Balanger Headers
Corsa
No Cats
BBK Tbody
K/N
AB Wires
Chromoly Flywheel
Spec Clutch 2+
Quaife Diff
Vec3 tunned and PCM Flashed
Light Weight ACR wheels and rotors

Lots more that are not power adders or affect dyno results

I have found on the Dyno that the Engine made more power and most importantly CONSISTENTpower warm (normal operating temps). Not cold and not heat soaked. I have never seen HP swings as large as what you were seeing but im sure cars are different. You should be happy with your results! Thats some serious power and plenty of torque:2tu:

I think the cool down for 30mins will net your best results. any longer then 45 and the engine gets to cold in my opinion nor would I want to do redline pulls on a cold engine.

And dont forgot, power under the curve is where it counts.

dont forget that TB doesnt always add power on a stock engine and headers arent worth the price for the power gain unless your more into it for sound. You could spend 3k on head work and gain so much more. Also, you need to get a nice cam in there. would really show some gains with the RRs you already have.

I like your mods shandon and I have updated the bolt on gen3 list..Do you remember if your numbers were sae or standard and what kind of dyno was it....

Sounds like ameture night to me with letting the car sit on the dyno in hopes of having a more powerfull car on paper

Any car should be Dyno'd at Normal operating temperature. Why? Because that is most usable/accurate/consistant data for tuning.
Your fan & thermostat will keep your motor within certain normal temp range. I usually wait untill i hear the fan cycle untill it cools down to 180/190(i forget the exact temp) as soon as the fan cuts off i begin getting her up to 4rth for the pull. This ensures that my numerous pulls can be acurrately compared to eachother. Tuning should be you overall goal, Not seeing a pleasing # on Paper

reading the post i was waiting for you to say; And then i threw a bag of ice on the intake manifold:lmao:

THis is correct. My diesel truck club sponsers two dyno days per year, and we make sure all trucks are driven an warmed to operating temperature before they are allowed on the dyno.

ameture spelling bee winner?

Nice job twister, 1/4 mile is way more important than dyno numbers.

to me honestly differant 1/4 mile tracks with their differant weather and differant prep conditions as well as even differant timing gear are no differant than dyno's..

If it's OK to push your car through the stageing lanes with ice on the intake in order to run that stock 11.7 at 123 mph in a stock gen3 then I dont see why it would be any differant to ice your intake and let the car sit on the dyno to hit that 450 rwhp sae in the stock gen3..

Really once the engine is in normal operating temps your not gonna do much better than 11.9 at 121 mph in the 1/4 mile and 440 rwhp on the dyno...

So why is the 1/4 mile OK and the dyno not..On both your just trying to achieave a number?
