I have been amazed at the 2003's and 2004's popping up on e-bay in the last few days. 96 Vipers total and 22 of them are SRT10's. That is a huge percentage when compared against total numbers produced.

It should be noted that 13 of them are new car sales by dealer. Obviously since they don't make GenI or II cars anymore you are going to have a disproportionate number of sales when you count new dealer cars. Once this is taken into account what you really have are 9 cars for sale used by owner out of the 83 used cars for sale, a ratio of 9.5:1. The Viper has been around for about 10 years, so this sounds about right to me.

Not surprising.

I'm amazed that the drop in resale value on the Gen II's..Is this because of a generally soft economy or because the Gen III Has been released ?

I have my eye on a Mint condition 2001 RT with less than 6000 Miles for $50K !!! Unbeleiveable

Cheers

IMO The number of years doesn't matter. Take the total number of vehicles produced and compare that. As in ...... the percentage of 03's and 04's produced compared to the 22 on e-bay and the same for gen1 and gen2 together. Also there are probably still some new/mso gen2's for sale by dealers.

Nope, all the Gen I and II vipers currently on ebay are used, check for yourself. But OK, let's compare the production numbers: 17,949 Vipers produced from 1992 - 2002. How many 2003 SRTs were produced? 1500? So 7.7% of all Vipers produced are SRT-10s. Well, there are 8 used 2003 SRT-10s on eBay (I thought there were nine, but one with 240 miles is MSO). There are 74 used GenI / GenII cars on eBay. So, 9.7% of all used Vipers on eBay are SRT-10s. Wow, there's a 2 percentage point discrepancy.

Insignificant.

FLUFFY,
Good point! I've checked the VCA classified, but they don't have any SRTs'. They do have 78 GTSs'and 37 RT'10s'.

$50k  for a 01 is way cheap. What is driving the prices down for the genII? I thought that a end of production would keep the resale prices at least stable.

SRT10... are you talking about the classifieds on this site, or somewhere else? There seem to be several SRTs listed here.

That's a 3 year old car now- to have it drop about 25% isn't that bad.

Your point and figures are all fluffy....pun intended :) If you go back to my posts and read them ...... I don't care if the cars are new or used. Bottom line = 96 Vipers total on e-bay and 22 are SRT's. That means that 23% of the Vipers on e-bay are SRT's........compare that to your figure = 7.7% of all Vipers are SRT's. That shows SRT's are in fact OVERLY represented on e-bay. For example, in 2002 there were 1622 Vipers built. I doubt that any time from the beginning of 2002 until now if only gen1 and gen2 Vipers were considered .....2002 cars would never have represented anywhere close to 23% of the Vipers for sale on e-bay. Also, where did you get your 1500 SRT # from ? Not saying it's right or wrong just wondering. Go back once again and read my first post. You are acting defensively and it was only meant as an observation (I have one on the way).

Maybe my first post should have read: "Compared to three or four weeks ago there ARE a lot more SRT's on e-bay ......... meaning over the last few weeks the number of SRT's on e-bay have went up significantly." Which also means the percentage of gen3 to gen1/2 has went up over the last few weeks.

Not being defensive as I really have no reason to be.

I suppose it depends on what point you are trying to make. If your hypothesis is that owners of SRTs are less satisfied than owners of the Gen I/II cars, then only looking at the number of used cars in each group is important. If you think that possibly the SRTs are lacking in overall appeal vs. the gen I/II cars then new cars will need to be taken into account (as it could indicate an unwillingness to buy on the part of the public) but would have to be compared to a baseline of similar data which isn't readily available (the number of 2002s vs earlier cars on ebay in mid-late 2002). I don't think you can make a positive statement about the number of 2002 Vipers that may or may not have been offered on ebay without some historical context, but it would be interesting to look at other exclusive car lines on ebay (996 turbo, BMW M series, whatever) and see how they measure up (used vs. new+used).

I don't know where the 1500 number came from, I've heard it thrown around a bit.

"Compared to three or four weeks ago there ARE a lot more SRT's on e-bay ......... meaning over the last few weeks the number of SRT's on e-bay have went up significantly." Which also means the percentage of gen3 to gen1/2 has went up over the last few weeks.

This may be true. So what does it mean? Is it the result of dealers dumping their showroom 2003s for the 2004s they are getting in? Last minute changes of mind by buyers? I've heard that dealers got a few 2003s after the certificates were all filled, which would be as good of reason as any to explain the sudden appearance of new SRTs.

Geesh.....it was just an observation. Where in my post did you read I was trying to make a point or slam SRT's. If I didn't have one on the way I would not have even made the post. What I have been doing is watching e-bay SRT's closely for several months and the listings have really increased in the last week. What does it mean ? Hell if I know....and I don't really care......I just thought it was interesting. FORGET that I said "VERSUS" gen1 and gen2.....it was not meant to be "them against us" It will be a very nice car. (for a girl  )

And one thing I would note real quickly (got some of my own eBaying to do...): Remember that 2004 is the first year that the SRT is "officially" available to the general public. I suspect many dealers that are getting their first SRT's think they can get a "1st year" premium not unlike the VW Beetle, Mini Cooper, PT Cruiser, etc. It was widely publicized that the 2003's were sold out over a year ago to existing Viper owners - even though we know of many that ended up on the open market anyway. So I think the 2002 vs. 2004 comparison is a bit off, as I view any 2002 new Viper auctions as "inventory clearing" - often with stock that had been languishing on the showroom floor for months. Whereas these 2004 new Viper listings seem to be more of a "scalping" hope, especially since they only arrived on these same showroom floors within the last couple of weeks at most. Just my humble thoughts...

Hey Chris......I didn't mean this as a gen1/2 vs SRT. When I said 2002 I could have used any current year from the past to make my point.....but that is way off course from my original post. I think today there are two 2004's and a bunch of 03's. Said s l o w l y :
M y p o s t w a s j u s t a n
o b s e r v a t i o n o f t h e l a r g e
i n c r e a s e o f s r t ' s o n e - b a y

I hope private parties that are just trying to sale do well, but the folks that were holding out and scalping the cars.....well, I hope they lose their ass.
p.s. the 2002 compared to 2004 had nothing to do with price....only the number of vehicles for sale.

I know ... I know. Like I told fluffy: I should have said: """""Compared to three or four weeks ago there ARE a lot more SRT's on e-bay"""""" , I screwed up on my header too, it should have read: """"""Compared to three or four weeks ago there ARE a lot more SRT's on e-bay""""". FORGIVE ME but I CAN'T change it now. BELIEVE me, if I wanted to do a gen2 vs SRT post I could do A LOT better then this post. If you are bothered here, I could have your heart rate Soooo high you would be in stroke mode
FYI: This morning there are 85 Vipers total and 20 of them are SRT's. I didn't count the 3 wrecked cars and the one maro/viper (which does look pretty good)
