Happy new year have a 94 viper it has headers, don't know what kind, kept the headers went with an rt high flow cat and magnaflow mufflers cant take the noise anymore even with ear plugs what can I do at this point to reduce the noise with this set up? and if I get a more restrictive muffler would it choke up the engine too much with the headersand the high flow cat? I've been shifting to a higher gear as quickly as possible too avoid the noise and at highway speeds in fifth seems to be quieter

Most Viper guys spend a lot of money to get their car to do that.

Having more effective 'mufflers' shouldn't cause that much of an issue performance wise, and if it makes the car to where you can personally enjoy it more, that is what you need to do.

Do you have room to double up and run 4 mufflers instead of 2?

I will have to take a look at the room situation for another muffler, that sounds like a good idea would it be best to get a same muffler as I have now or anything that fits thanks for the reply

is it drone that is the problem? or just that it is loud? There is a difference and I find drone to be worse which the right exhaust system can solve.

Are your mufflers in the rear or in sills?

Whatthe,

Are the RT's Ceramic or Metal substrate?
The metal ones sound like straightpipes, ceramic dampens the sound a bit.

Is your system all 3" , or is any component 2.5"?

RT's are metal was told that ceramic did not last as long, I'll have to take side covers off to see if 2.5 or 3inch system I'am hoping that I don't need another total system as the current system is not that old plus I'am in partners with the car with another guy so we have to agree on all fixes the sound does not bother him as much as me.

I realize that you would prefer not to replace the existing system due to cost. However, I went through this same problem with my 95 and changed out to the following setup last year with excellent results.
1. continued using Borla stainless Headers that were previously intalled
2. replaced HF cats with Morosso Spiral Flow stainless bullet mufflers (see Summit Racing for specifications)
3. continued using Roe Racing muffler from my previous setup which I believe is a Borla muffler
4. welded in Dynatech Vortex Cones in the rear of the Borla muffler (just inside the muffler prior to the out pipe)
5. all seams were welded (no clamps)

The sound is amazing, with no drone. As a result, the sound was just slightly louder than stock, and we are able to cruise without having to wear earplugs on long trips. Nice mellow/deep sound that will scream when you get on it. Best of both worlds.

I have a 1972 Datsun 1200 Sunny coupe EP race car, it been a race car since new, at 10,000 RPM it was ear splitting and well over the 100 DB noise limit with a Flowmaster 40 on it. Seemed the Flowmaster didn't remove any of the highs, and low weren't the problem. I removed the large heavy Flowmaster and replaced it with a 12" Moroso Spiral Flow muffler it cut the noise in half, removed most of the high and took out the painful frequencies.
I don't know how they would work on a Viper but it did a great job on my little screamer.

As RT/ED posted, an inexpensive, and somewhat effective drone reducer is the installation of Dynatech Vortex Cones. They will cost you a couple HP, but if the drone goes away, it is certainly worth that tiny loss.

Another option would be to switch back to stock cats. Most tuners probably have some used sets around that might be just the ticket.

The company most noted for reducing higher flow drone is Corsa. Their technology tends to work pretty well on Vipers.

Even in a GTS I fould that I needed some 'flow control' to keep the noise tolerable. The spirals were key for me...but I recently was dealing with some strange rattling and discovered I gernaded the inside of the passenger side spiral. Must have been a defect. Right now, I'm waiting on something a bit defferent to try...Flo Pro # 5522 mufflers. I'll stuff these under the side sills, no cats, and hopefully have the room to hook them into my remaining Corsa system.
