Just got rid of a 911 turbo and purchased a bone stock 99 RT/10, two months ago. After reading the topics every day on this site, I decided to order a corsa exhaust, high flow cats, smooth tubes & filters, form Parts Rack. Just recieved them, did not install them yet. I was reading an article in the Snake-Oyl Catalog that basically states that a 3" exhaust will actually decrease the HP in the car without changing the headers, IS THIS TRUE?

I decided to call Snake-Oyl to inquire about an exhaust and ask them about the exhaust article they wrote. They stated that the stock 2-1/4" headers behind a new 3" exhaust will decrease HP.

Then they continued to try to sell me an exhaust, stating that their exhaust will increase the power of my car by 30HP, however their exhaust does not include headers. Im confused???

Is the difference between a 3" Corsa exhaust vs. 3" Snake Oyl's exhaust, without headers? Besides sound shouldnt the HP increase be similar? Why does all 3" exhausts loose HP, but theirs increase HP? Or are they just full of **** ?

Do you really need headers to increase HP?

Can someone help me? Did I just waste money, with no HP gain?

HELP?

they have 2 products:

rear sub assembly that is stock size straight pipes that just replace the rear muffler

3" full cat back that is new resonators and then straight pipes out the back (like a Borla)
[/list]

Which were they trying to sell you?

In addition to the horsepower issues, which I unfortunately don't have the experience to comment on, DRONE relief one of the exclusive benefits of the Corsa system. For that reason alone I'd stick with the Corsa.

Why don't you call their tech support @ 800-486-0999 and get their side of the story.....

DSI,

Regardless of the brand or the size,an cat back exhaust will NOT add any power that you can feel.

I had a Borla on my car (00GTS)and beside the fact that I removed it because the noise (droning) was killing me,i could not feel any extra power.

I went to a Corsa (not the 3")and same thing again,no extra power that i could feel, but the noise is great,as a matter of fact the main reason to replace the exhaust is to get a better sounding car.

Think about it,the car is rated at 450 HP,and let say that an cat back is worth 15hp,that is a 3% increase,do you really think that you can feel it?\

I think Snake Oyl claims the Hp increase because they eliminate the rear muffler (in the catalog they claim 25hp or more). They were probably trying to sell you the 2.25" Cat Back.

They have two sizes in cat-backs and sub assemblies. A stock diameter and a 3" diameter and as stated above, they were most likely trying to sell you the stock diameter cat-back system. They say that the horsepower gain is with the stock diameter assembly and that going to a 3" with stock headers will actually reduce the horsepower. This makes sense if you look at it from a hydrodynamics point of view. As water flows from a small tube to a large tube, the speed of the water slows down and you get a disruption in the smooth flow of the water in the form of whirling or convective water. The same happens with the exhaust gasses. I assume that the power loss they claim you get is from the disruption in the smooth flow. I also believe that the horsepower gain number they are talking about only applies to the older GenII's, the creampuffs will have less of a gain. I had the Snake-Oyl 2.25" cat-back and the sound of the exhaust system was greatly improved and I did feel a better throttle response, but I never did a dyno run between stock and with the cat-back to back up their horsepower claim.

Their sub-assembly is basically a muffler delete and the cat-back includes high flow resonators on top of that. Both have the elongated tips (they stick out pretty far and I would scrape if I came at the driveway too fast or too straight).

If you are going to stick with their theory that the best gain with stock headers is staying with a stock diameter cat-back and you want to save some $$, then you can just go down to your nearest muffler shop and have them cut out the rear muffler and put straights in, and you can also order the Snake-Oyl resonators. (I don't actually know if you can order JUST their resonators). The main advantage to going with purchasing anyone's cat-back system is that you get to keep your stock exhaust intact in case you want to convert back. The down side is that they are costly.

does anyone on the board actually have the Snake-oyl 3" cat-back? I haven't found anyone who does or seen a comment on how it sounds, etc.

Billy Boat, B&B tri-flow says the resonator comes from them.

Don't worry just put them on. I've not seen any substantial GAINS or LOSSES from a cat back only, either the 2 1/2 or 3" but you will pick up some HP with the high flow cats. If you want to check what others have dynoed check out my web site below then click on the "dyno results" at the top I list 75 cars with mods, including the Corsa and snake oil sub assembly.

Here are some creamy cream puffs like yours.
