Can someone tell me if this is an aftermarket exhaust header? Or Stock?
I just got this 1997 GTS and was told it has a [*****] exhaust system...possibly just the Cat back? [image]

Tom is right, you have aftermarket.

1997 was cast iron. 1998+ was tubular, but without any welds in the pipe. Your's has one noticable in the picture hence aftermarket. Seems like stock heat shields though somewhat twisted up to accommodate your header.

Time for wires.....

Welcome to the adiction....
As Tom said above not Gen2 tubular as i also fitted them to my Gen1...
Also looks like they might be blowing a bit by the black valve covers...
I re fitted my heat shields to borla headers just bent them to fit but looks good..

So, is it correct to say that Gen I's had cast headers and GenII has tubing headers?
I was told this has a Henesy exhaust system. It does say that on the very large chrome exhaust tips ...and I noticed that there are no mufflers near the tail pipes.
The car is sooo LOUD I am wondering if it's a Cat back 3" system and is loud cause of no rear mufflers? ..or...there is a full exhaust with no Cats and no sill mufflers and tubular headers? [image]

[/image] ....it is VERY LOUD.
Also, when I scan the DBII, all the monitors are on line with the exception of "catalyst not "
I guess I''ll have to pull a sill and take a gander when I have time.

I would buy some new wires if I was you. The one is the picture looks like it needed to be changed awhile back.

To clarify, stock all GENI and all GEN II through 1997 are cast. All GENII 1998 and above, along with GENIII are SS Tubular

Let me also take the guess work outta what you have. Cuz its about dead obvious to me.

Its EITHER a B&B header or a Henass Header.

The weld on the outside most pipe is the dead give away.

The reason you cant know which is that Henass supposedly had B&B making the exhaust for him, and then they copied it. So John said.

N E ways.. its 1 or the other.

I didn't think I was old, yet. And my qualities average out to be undesireable, so better try another marketing approach. Some Gen 2 had the cast manifolds as well.

The "kit" should include the bolts. As we all know, the Gen 2 guys are shorter than the Gen 1 studs. (They are shorter than Gen 1 because the flange is thinner.) You also need the V-clamps and stubs of the down pipes to make it worthwhile. Then the only fabrication is connecting 2.5" pipes.

Even so, the buyer needs to cut the bridge pieces between pipes. The Gen 1 head bolts get in the way. The Gen 1 heat shield can be re-used. It is basically a layer of foil, cardboard, and foil so go ahead and bend it to remove and reinstall it. Try not to tear it.

I did it for the weight. Whether it adds power depends on who you ask. But 20# off the front was worth it to me for the autocross benefits. See here to rub it in:

Reminder - Shorty OEM headers add zero power vs stock cast iron on GENII engines. Dyno proven.

Might make you feel better though.

Weight savings is the reason.

Tom, would you say low end torque is what's preferred in autocross?

Get a hold of 98-02 cats to go with the 98-02 tube headers and no cutting or fabrication should be needed.

Then the only fabrication is connecting 2.5" pipes.

I got the sill off today ( easy 5 min job) and here are the photos...
Everywhere I measure, the pipe diameter is 3"

The muffler is about 12" long and 6" diameter. The Cat is about 13" long.
TIA

Looks like it might be a heavily modded OEM cat, cut in half and flared to 3". No idea on the rest.

Looks like either a H e nessy or TNT catback exhaust. I had a similar set up on my RT until I replaced it with no cats and Dynomax ultraflows. I am betting your headers are either B&B's or H M S.

Here is another shot. It never occurred to me that the Cat and the **** would be all one piece with no clamp between them. I would imagine the stock system would be different?
Thanks again to all. I appreciate the input.
I'm just trying to establish if I have hi-flow cats ..so I'll be all set if'n I go with a Roe S/C. :headbang: :2tu:
Tha consenus seems to be that there are no stock parts on this 97 GTS

I think the simple test is this: What is the pipe diameter of the cat?

The cat + muffler look just like the Hen S E exhaust on my RT when I bought it.
