Just finished doing a second round of exhuast modifications. I was not happy with the first try. My first attempt was to replace the front section with the dual catalysts with the RSI cat eliminator pipes. I replaced only those sections leaving the stock mufflers and crossover in place. That worked well enough but the sound quality was awful. Sounded like a mack truck with a hole in the muffler. The sound volume was okay, maybe a little too loud due to the resonances.
I have now replaced the stock mufflers with Dynamax race bullet mufflers. I kept the stock diameter of 2 1/2. At that diameter they only offered a 16 1/2 inch version. I have the 22 or 24 inch race bullet on my RT/10 in a 3 inch configuration. That combo is too loud for my wife. So this time I placed 2 of the 16 1/2 inchers in series. The mufflers are straight through so the combo aspect should not be a serious deterent to flow. Coupled together (welded) they are are perfect replacement length. The stock muffler is about 33 1/2 and these ended up just over 33 inches. I kept the stock crossover with the hope that the crossover would help in the quality of sound aspect. It is heavy so discarding it would be a weight benefit.
Anyway, the resulting sound is so much better. It now sounds closer to the borla system in a Gen II. Not quite as loud but the same sharper, higher pitch sound. Much better than the original or the sound with cats removed. The overall performance gain is not yet known. The cat removal netted less than 10 RWHP. I am not expecting much more for the muffler change. But pending headers and 3 inch system this will have to do for a few years. I will try to post a picture later to show what it looks like.
