I have a 1996 RT-10 with the following modifications:

Corsa exhaust
High-flow cats
Bellanger headers
T+D roller rockers
smoothe tubes
'stage 3' head work
enlarged throttle bodies
cams
lightened flywheel
3.54 gears

What sort of ball-park power and torque (flywheel) should I be expecting with these modifications? I've had the car dyno'd but am not going to mention the figures until I can get some sort of idea what I should be expecting with $15k worth of mods. Cheers!

Cams?...must be a different motor..lol

Anyway....depends on the CAM and adequate tuning and fuel system.

But I'd say around 550rwhp or 650 flywheel

Sorry, CAM! I don't have the cam specs to hand right now but the fuelling system is standard (i.e., no upgraded fuel pump or larger injectors). But do you not think that 650 hp flywheel is excessive for a n/a Gen 1.5 motor, despite these mods? That's 235 hp (i.e., more than 50%) over standard!

Depends on what you have for fuel/ignition management.

If the port work and cam are good I don't see why 600rwhp wont be achieved if the tune is right.

When I was doing research on my Gen1 mods, I found a number of sources that pointed to 500RWHP for this sort of setup.

708 CAM
300+ CFM intake
1 3/4" headers
3" exhaust with high flow cats
65mm + TB's
Tune

I ended up adding a ROE SC to my setup, so I don't have direct data for you.

Sounds like you are concerned with breaking your motor? lol, You won't. When you install a power adder, Turbo, S/C, Nitrous, then the motor needs some work, otherwise, you are fine.

That's all a bit worrying then as the car only made 490 hp and 499 lb ft at the flywheel with these mods. I had been thinking that was the sort of power I could have expected with the mods the car had when I bought it ( Corsa exhaust, high-flow cats, Bellanger headers, T+D roller rockers, smoothe tubes). I spent an extra $10k at Valaya Racing for the other mods and had been hoping for 550hp/ 550 lb ft (flywheel) from the car. The car appears to be tuned fairly well as the a/f ratio is pretty good (if anything, slightly lean). I'm wondering where I should go from here?

That is a good number for a Gen 1 motor, I think I would be more than pleased.

My 95 has a very similar setup as your 96, minus the throttle bodies, and the gears which won't make any HP difference.

It only made 469 RWHP and 550 RWTQ. I know the heads I have are good heads, and I have a crower cam.

Are you saying that your dyno RWHP number is 416 (490 * .85)? If you only got 416 RWHP on the dyno, I'd be searching for answers too. A couple of Gen1's around here make around 400RWHP with just headers/exhaust.

I'd go back to the tuner and have them start the debug process. Start asking them specifics on the mods they did. Ask them what the specs on the CAM and heads are. Have them check all the obvious stuff, as in the car is running on all 10 cylinders. As odd as that seems, my car's first couple of dyno runs were only on 8 cylinders due to a plug into the VEC-3 not being fully seated. The dyno numbers were almost 80% of the expected number. Given that the CAM had just gotten more agressive, I didn't know the difference in how it felt. Exhaust smoke was the only tell tale sign.

If you're 490RWHP from the dyno, I'd say you're spot on and looking good. That would be 575 flywheel, and pretty close to the power of an '08.

Yes, it's 490hp flywheel so around 420hp rwhp. Hence why I'm not entirely happy. The main issue I have with getting the potential problem resolved is that I imported the car back to the UK from California in December. Hence it'll be difficult to take it back to Valaya Racing! They were going to get it dyno'd prior to the car being returned to me but didn't have time in the end apparently. Not sure where to go from here...

I did not realize you were talking about flywheel hp when you said 490. Yes, 420 RWHP with those mods, it appears that something is not right on your car.

I actually think it sounds about right. You now have the same numbers from a stock GEN II.

At the cost of an extra $15k I would just bought a Gen II with some modifications, which would then make it higher power than my car! And with a roof and proper windows!!

Given that I've already had the car on the dyno, does anyone have any advice as to what I should be doing to troubleshoot a potential problem with the power output of the car? One thing that might be worth noting is that since the recent work was done to the car I've noticed a sort of 'gassy' smell (like natural gas not gasoline), especially on open throttle. Someone else thought that it was an oil smell although there's no evidence of any oil leaking. Any advice welcome. Cheers.

How easy is it to get any of the VEC units fitted and to subsequently tune the car? Bearing in mind there's no-one with specific Viper experience up in this neck of the woods!

Take out the spark plugs and give them a look over. Check to make sure that all of your cylinders are firing. Is there any noticable exhast smoke, especially at WOT?

With your 'tune' what computer did they put in?

Given the mods you have, I think your car should be making a minimum of 450 RWHP or possibly around 470 RWHP.

I know another guy on here (Bonkers) had similiar issues with his 99, it was not making over 400 RWHP and it was a Gen II with some mods. I don't recall what the problem was but I do remember him saying he had Chuck Tator at Tator's Dodge do some thing on the car. It might be worth giving Chuck a call, he has always been more than helpful on the phone with myself and might be able to give you some guidance.

Just a thought,
Ed

Thanks, I may well just do that!

I misread some of this as well.... Well, you are in the UK.... hmmm.... so difficult for a turner indeed. If it were my car, I would probably take it to the drag strip and see what kind of times I could put down. Your HP/TQ numbers are way off... You should be alot higher with your mods and especially the ported heads, like people have been saying. Since checking the trottle bodys would do no good and you can't just take off the heads and slide the cam out, I would approach ligically like others are saying....

Check Spark plugs.... Time consuming, but a logical step. Also, maybe even pull off each plug wire as well to confirm each cylinder is getting a spark and see if you can see the spark. I sometimes push a nail up in the wire so it makes contact and hold it down my the plug to see the electrical spark.

Fuel.... I wonder if you are getting adequate fuel? I just changed my fuel filter as my car has 70,000 miles on it. I thought of changing it, because I could hear my fuel pump "whining" a little and then it would cut out and hear it once in a while again, although this did not seem to affect my power at the time. I had to listen closely, but I heard it. Now I hear absolutely nothing with the new filter. Maybe it is flowing freely now and thats why it's not whining. I couldn't feel any difference in power with the new filter though. It's not too hard to change, just need a little afternoon time and safety goggles, so you don't get gas in your eyes.

Check wireing/vacume lines. Take some time and go through the motor and check each connector and plug that is oriented around electrical wires. Also check the rubber vaccume lines for cuts and holes. Maybe a vacume line came off somewhere in the back side of the motor? May want to check the PCV Valve too, it's located in the valve cover, costs a few bucks for a new one. Check the wires around the injectors.... they need to be plugged in securely.

The only other thing I can think of is checking stuff around the air filters.... Of course your car needs air/fuel/spark, so just double check stuff keeping that in mind.

Good luck and post up if you find anything!!! Cheers!

Was the export ECU installed? I think that decreases power somewhat.

How do they report the flywheel numbers from a 4WD dyno - you aren't driving the front rollers, are you?

No, I've got the US ECU on the car still. And 4WD dyno easily does RWD cars - you just don't use the front rollers. Thanks for the advice and I'll post what transpires. I've also been in touch with the tuner and he said he'd back in touch with me with some possibilities. Cheers.
