Well, the "odds" are that its a bad bet. They would not offer this if "on average" they were experiencing more than $1,500 in repair costs in the period covered. On an individual level, its insurance. If you have $200 in warranty repairs in five years, you lose. If you have $3,000 in covered repairs, you win. I usually do not buy warranties, but I did for my Suburban, and the entire hydra-boost brake system had to be replaced at 4 years, I won that one. I also had it on my 2002 RT/10, then I supercharged it(can you say voided?) and sold it before 3 years. Guess I didn't need that extra warranty.

New '05..

At $1500 is it worth it?

Opinions?

KL

Nay.

Opinion:

Power modifications and warranties don't mix well. Seems modding Vipers is hard to resist. . .

Yes, absolutely, there have been issues, ask any Gen 1 guy about head gaskets. Dodge really steps up on this car, even if you track it and drive it in with a problem. And you can transfer the warranty to the next buyer, I think that would have a value of at least $1500 on the sale of the car 4 years from now when it's out of warranty. And that is a good price, dealers can charge what they want for it. If that's Pembertons price grab it.

My 03 (and I think the 04s) have 7/70k) so it would be really dumb to pay extra for the extended warranty. Most consumer reports say that extended warranties are generally a bad idea for new cars.

Based upon the number of problems reported with SRT-10 owners on this forum, it seems that most failures occur within 10k miles and within a year or two.

My guess is that if you have too much trouble with your Viper in the first 2 years or so, you will probably unload the sucker. If you do that the money spent on the extended warranty is a total waste.

If you are 100% sure you are going to keep the car for 5 or 6 years, than based upon first year reports the Viper might be an exception to what the consumer magazines suggest.

But hey its your money (and dodge would love to get it).

BTW Most things that need coverage on a car of average reliabilty aren NOT covered by extended warranties.

Yep, '03 and '04 both came with the 7/70 power train warranty. The '05 did not - on any SRT model from what I understand...
