For flatspotting, is it okay to just do some burnouts? Better to have the tires shaved? Okay just to drive them 'til the spots wear out (does that even work? issues with braking before it does?)? Advantages/disadvantages of each would be appreciated.

I'd go with the burnouts

tsk, tsk, tsk been there, done that. What happened? Get a set of Stoptech brakes and you won't flatspot (or at least I haven't yet). At OTC we got a "mild" flatspot on SSpeed Racers car, I put the fronts on the rear and did about a dozen hard burnouts. Result: helped a little but not a total fix.

I flat spotted my front tires about year ago when a Vette went off the track in a cloud of dust and I couldn't see him so I stood on the brakes. New tires, pretty good flat spot, I had them shaved, result: perfect tires, completely round and only lost about 2K in tread.

slaughterj,
HAVE THE TIRES TRUED. This is the only way to guarantee that the tire and wheel, as a unit are round. Check your email for a article I did for our Viper newsletter about trueing tires. The cost is about $30 - $40 a tire, and when going down the road, you feel like you are on ball bearings - NO vibration or shimmy at all.
Good Luck,

Thanks for the email. So how is that different than shaved or is it the same thing?

Hey Slaughter,

I think it depends on how bad the flat-spots are; if you can see the belts, than I would replace them, but if you have a mild flat-spot, than a nice burnout should clean it off.
