I was going thru some magazines today when I ran into one of my favorite articles. Motor Trend, JAN 04 SRT-10 vs Ford GT

I searched the internet and was pleasantly surprised to find it. This is probably a repost (although I can't find it when I search) but it is very interesting especially with all the new super cars coming out. Notice on page six how close the performance figures are. I really believe the Viper is and has been a world class performer since the day it came out.

Didn't the GT always have the same HP they just upgraded the HP figure? Or did they do something to the GT to up the HP already?

Not sure, I always saw different predictions/speculations on numbers between 500-550 before the official numbers were released.

Either way, pretty HOT car! :2tu:

I really like the GT however side by side in person comparisons, I still think the Viper wins. It was a pleasant surprise to see the viper match the GT numbers. I guess I am really not surprised but I thought the additional $80,000 would bring something else to the table. What is impressive is the Viper's 60-0 in 97 feet. That is amazing. I think that is a record.

I am not expert but I can probably guess weight distribution and traction. The engine is mounted in the rear of the GT which definitely aids traction.

here is a dyno sheet of a bone stock ford GT with just 835 miles on the odometer. as you can see it put down 515 rwhp and 483 rwtq on the dynojet chassis dyno. since the car has the engine in the back it is only losing about 12% of its power to the ground. this means its making about 575 crankshft horsepower. this is alot more than 500 hp or even 550 hp. the torque to the ground is about the same as a bone stock SRT-10. most srt-10's put about 450 rwhp to the ground. john colleti took his personal ford GT to JDM'S chassis dyno back east and with a 15 psi pulley swap (3 more psi boost than stock) and no tune his GT put down 615 rwhp on JDM's dynojet. the A/F ratio was a consistent 11.5 across thru the pull. MM&FF did a drag test on this car and it ran 10.92 in the 1/4

^^^Impressive. I knew it was underated with the numbers it put down vs the Enzo and CGT. 11.2 @ 131mph in a 3500lb car sounded more like 550 to the wheels not crank as advertized.

BTW the numbers in the article posted was not the 550hp version. It was an earlier prototype so you can discard the acceleration numbers from that test.

Supercar status, in the end, will not have been attained by the Ford GT. Although lacking credentials in this market, Ford intended to create a car granting it instant access to this rarified territory. This would have been a lot of fun, finally seeing an American car included in the ranks of these great cars. Do you remember the Superbowl commercial a couple years ago, showing Rod Millen driving the GT on a race track? The speed and sound of the car were truly awesome!

Unfortunately, engineering and quality issues have devastated this car. My next door neighbor was recently notified that production of the cars had stopped, and the Ford representative could not give him any idea of when to expect his car. Below is an article from the June issue of Car & Driver. I'm not sure if you will be able to read it, but here's a try

I took the picture below at a local dealer. Notice the finish quality of the driver side door molding

Not really acceptable, in my opinion.

The SRT 10, in contrast, is not a hot-hammer job, like the hastily-contrived Ford GT. With the addition of a supercharger (the Ford is supercharged as well), and racing suspension (Moton or other), the Dodge will outperform the Ford in every way.

Actually this is pretty old news. The article was probably written some time in February or March in order to make the printing deadline for the June issue. The problems are fixed now. Later serial numbers do not have these problems. The car is currently in full production.

While I agree this is pretty bad, the 03 SRT, the 92 R/T and the 96/97 GTSs all had some issues... The SRTs had some serious ones, power steering replacements, camshaft/valve issues (I forget that one, I luckily didn't have the issue), computer upgrades, etc...

While none seem as serious as the GT, and for freakin 200k, I expect a bad car, we can't say the first viper's were flawless (believe me, I have a viper by choice, my wife hated the GT, and it IS a more original car by far)

2006 Coupe On order (order cancelled due to no power increase!)

Good deal to that Nsane1, I agree completely, when I read the article on how it was the same motor I was sick. You would think for transfiguring to the coupe, like they did in 96 that DC would at least bump in to 550 along with better handling suspension. Personally I hope they drop some weight off. Like Shelby himself said when asked... Is there anything you'd change about the Viper? "oh i'd take off about 500 lbs to improve it all around" I couldn't agree more with that. I think we ALL should push on DC for a big weight reduction like they did with the GTS in 96 by using better and lighter parts.

FYI in the latest AutoWeek there are 12(twelve) Ford GT's being advertised at various prices from $195,000-230,000 asking prices. They better get realistic soon or sell fast if they want the big premiums seems like prices are dropping fast. Another few months or so and these cars will be at sticker or less especially when used cars w/ miles start showing up and production really gets ramped up.

Was offered one at 168k last week. Another car on ebay had a buy-it-now of 175k....no takers. Its losing 10k a month, and will continue to do so, until it gets to MSRP. And Ford just raised the MSRP 10k, I guess to help the gouging dealers get closer to MSRP.

I had strongly considered selling my GTS for a Ford GT, but have since lost all interest. I believe the Ford GT will be at MSRP or lower by years end. If Ford produces at least 3000 (like they say they will), I think lightly used examples may drop below $100K with a few yrs. After the first two yrs from new, used GTS prices have essentially stabilized without a large percentage loss from sticker as opposed to most exotics.
