Fuel injector cleaner-good idea?

Auto Zone guy yesterday talked me into buying a can of fuel injector cleaner suggesting that my 01 GTS (18,000 miles) probably could use a can by now.

I searched the threads and found no one suggesting one way or the other. I've got no engine issues..always use 93. If it ain't broke don't fix it is in the back of my mind.

Anyone have any problems using a FI cleaner?

Tom will probably jump in here real soon and give the correct answer.

The answer probably depends on the quality of fuel that you buy. I believe most if not all gasoline has cleaning agents already in it.

I personally don't see any harm in dropping a can a seafoam in the tank every oil change.

+1 on the Seafoam. Walmart has it for about $7 a can compared to $10 at the parts store. Can't hurt and I like the way the car runs when it's in there ... just SEEMS to have more power.

Personally, I would go with Redline or BG. Cost a little more, but probably safer.

Best over the counter fuel injector cleaner is Chevron with techron, It's the only thing I've ever seen that will clean the GM style poppet injectors common on the vortech engines. Short of using BG products and their cleaning kit, that's the best you'll do. We even use it here in my shop from time to time. Hope this helps. Mark "Throttle" Hawks, ASE L1 CDMAT

Second the Chevron Fuel System Cleaner. Best to run thru then change your oil soon after.

Seafoam for Higher mileage cars for me. Run it for about a 100 miles and change the oil. Have not tried it in the fuel system or tranny.

i had tony armour clean my injectors 3 years ago, he did a great job. took them off, ups'd them to him and they were back on the car in a week. done right too. if there is something wrong with the injector, cleaning will not help. he flows each one and gives you a detailed report leaving no questions

Plum, Do you remember what the charge for the cleaning/tuning on your injectors was? Does he adjust them or just report on their status?

dont remember the price, i wanna say about $100. mine didnt need anything other than cleaning so not sure about anything else. give tony a call. hes a good guy.

Just in case that it doesn't, here is what Tom had to say:


The use of premium gasoline does not guarantee good injector cleanliness whatsoever. The cleanliness comes from the detergent additives, not the octane grade; so a no-name premium can be far dirtier than a name brand regular.

Chevron Techron has been a consistent high performance aftermarket additive. Can't go wrong.

There are one reason why an aftermarket additive should be needed less. GM started their "TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline" a few years ago and the amount of detergent additive in these gasolines, when used on a fairly regular basis, will keep your injectors clean and clean up dirty injectors.

Top Tier Gasoline (Top Tier Gasoline)

Note that any marketer can decide to pay up for a bigger additive package and that it does not matter if they are big or small. The license they receive from GM allows the use of the TOP TIER logo, which becomes part of their marketing campaign. Unless you were traveling to Mexico recently, I'd say you would be just fine by using these gasolines.

I do the Chevron injector cleaner about every year and a half.
