Fuel pump on it\'s way out?

For the last 2 days, I belive my FP is on it's way out. The car doesn't fire right up sometimes, maybe 2 seconds worth of cranking to get it going. I always let the pump pressureize before cranking (force of habbit). Even if I let it pressureize 3 times, does the same thing. Then sometimes it fires right up.

I know that gen1's are prone to fp failure. I'm going to replace the filter (have it, just need to put it in) and battery, maybe i'll get lucky. Worst case, how much labor is involved in the R&R of the pump, and can I run a holley blue inline if I had to?

Re: Fuel pump on it\'s way out?

Belive it or not, I think it's the throttle cables. They are not closing the blades all the way when the pedal is released (wondered why the response was so good!) which I think is leaning out the mix too much at startup.

I depressed the pedal all the way w/ the car off and felt the final "click" which I guess I missed the 1st time. Car started right up after sitting for an hour, and then again on the way back. I'll leave it like this for a week, hopefully that will be the cure.

Hmmm....

I dont think its the pump becasue you said "pressurise 3 times and it still happens" . You also said 'last 2 days'

If the pump assy (leakdown cylinder) is bad, the 3X primer WORKS every time. ie free fix. And it does not go out in 2 days.

You have a bad TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) or a cable hanging up affecting that sensor.

Yeah, I think I got it narrowed down to the throttle linkage and the TPS sensor Jon.

Luckily my 96 RT service manual came in today... WOOOHOOO!! No more flying blind!
