You would think that traction should be a little better with extra weight in the rear of the car. A full tank of gas would give approx. 120 lbs. weight. It's gotta help.
I think it has more to do with front-rear weight balance rather than just "more weight on the rear wheels". In the small bit of autox'ing I've done I found it amazing how the balance of the car differs between a full tank and a near-empty tank.
I've noticed on a freeway off ramp the other day that the rear end felt loose like it wanted to go its own way. I looked down and sure enough the gas tank was near empty. (and i wasnt going that fast either!)
