There's a post that I can't seem to find that describes the clever tricks to employ when installing a new fill-door/gas cap cover.

Taking the old one off is easy, getting the filler tube connected to the new one is that hard part and I know someone's posted some important "how-to's" on this.

Can anybody direct me to where those posts are....I've tried all the key word searches I can think of and can't find 'em.

For humor's sake here is (I kid you not) what the shop manual says (and this is verbatim.....)

REMOVAL

(1) Remove screws holding fuel fill door to retaining ring on inside of roof

(2) Separate fuel fill door from vehicle

INSTALLATION

(1) Position fuel fill door to vehicle

(2) Install screws to hold fuel fill door to retainer ring on inside of roof

....now isn't that special!

There is a little wire hook you can make to grab the inside of the filler neck (behind the flap) to pull up on the neck to get it into the rubber.

Grease the inside of the rubber.

Having said that, what I did was run the car to near empty. This allowed enough movement in the filler neck to pull it a little through the hole which made it simple to put the rubber piece around it.

Hope that makes sense.

Makes sense. I bent a barbeque skewer and even with 3/4 of a tank, the install was a 5 minute job.

The other important elements are dishwashing liquid and putting the gasket on the gas cap first.

Thanks :usa:

I had the guys at Roe Racing install mine as I was afraid I would drop the hook into my gas tank. It took Dave 8 minutes from start to finish.

Bob, do you ever actually get to drive that thing? Hope all is well and hope the car starts treating you as well as you treat it soon.
