What is the value of a used Gen 1 hood in perfect/mint condition?

Interested in that diamondback hood, and wondering how much gen 1 hoods sell for to trade it up.

I know the retail on them is over 10 grand, but what do people purchase them for on the boards? and ebay and such?

Thanks in advance!

I have one I have been trying to sell for $2000, but with no luck. It is in great shape too. I would guess if you wanted to get rid of your hood quick, $1000 to $1500. Just have to find the right person that needs it.

Jason.....call a large local auto salvage yard, and tell them what they have. They will put it on their national computerized locator service, and they'll respond as soon as a request from a bodyshop or insurance company comes across. Usually you'll get 30-40% of retail value. I've done it lots...always works.

As you can't get Gen I hoods from the manufacturer any more, and Gen II hoods are retailing at around $18,000 last I checked, it sounds like the key part is finding the motivated buyer. Someone who wants to replace a Gen I hood currently has to buy a Gen II hood and decide whether its worth the trouble to spend the time to make it right (fill in the NACA duct and over-wheel vents), or just leave it looking like a hybrid Gen I/II - most wouldn't care, but the purist would. Or, there is another option of getting an aftermarket Carbon Fiber hood for around $5k last I checked. I imagine if you find the right buyer who is trying to keep their Gen I in perfect stock condition, you should be able to ask a decent amount (and they would likely be willing to pay it). Hard part is finding that buyer.

Someday you might want to sell your Gen 1.... and when you do.. wouldn't it be great to be able to advertise all original parts available??

I am contemplating the diamond back hood... but would keep my original for future restoration.

I might be interested for the right price. I have a 94 RT10 that has some factory defect stress cracks in the hood and am debating between a different hood or having this hood repaired. Is your hood in perfect shape with no stress crack problems, and what color is it?
Thanks
Rob

Mine is red, no stress cracks as far as I can see, but some scrapes and bubbles in the paint. Need to be repainted regardless.

Thanks for the help. I figured the stock hood would sell for at minimum 3-5 grand but it appears I must be way off. If they are selling for much less then that its probably just worth keeping around for when I sell the car.

Oh and Rob my hood is red in perfect shape with no cracks/bubbles nothing. In fact its never seen rain before :) There is a tiny tiny tiny tiny little nick from a rock that drives me nuts but im probably the only person who can see it. At this time it looks like I will probably not be selling it thou. The diamondback hood is 5K plus paint. Was hoping selling gen I hood might take care of some of that price damage but doesnt seem so.

no problem, and i wasnt trying to offend you with the question.

some people know about SMV and some do not. if i was in the market for a hood, i would want to know about its history as i am sure you would. glad to hear the hood is a clean one. :2tu:

i also agree with the others, i would keep it. if you change your mind about the stock hood in the future, i would be willing to bet the hood will cost you alot more to replace as time goes on.

Why are you apologizing John? I was wondering the same thing. Most people know the history with this guy and his hair brained idea. It was a legitimate question.

its cool duane. i still think it was a legit question too and i am not appologizing for the question. Rob (94 viper) is a friend of mine, and i was looking out for him when i asked the question about the hoods true condition.

but i can also understand jasons position about wanting the whole SMV thing dropped.

i really cant blame him for wanting to move on. we hammered the SMV guys and the whole thing pretty hard for quite some time. if it were me, i would want to lick my wounds, put the past behind me and become an active part of this great community again as soon as possible. i get the impression that is what jason wants to do and i think we should let him.

dont you guys agree?

Rob,
I have a black 94, and from my experience would recommend that you have your hood properly refinished. The fit will be better, and the cost will be much lower. Mine had the stress fractures (and understand that many black Gen I's did/do) and am now very happy with the refinish on my hood. I have actually had it done a few times, as they came back very shortly after being painted. This time appears to have worked (fingers crossed). Find a place that stands behind their work, and you should only have to pay once.
PM me if you want to discuss in detail.
