Would putting a Gen 2 hood on my Gen 1 be a bad idea?

I have already started to modify it looks and performance wise, so its slowly moving away from being original ... I would really like the look of a gen 2 hood better, but not sure if its a good idea in terms of selling it in the future? would it add value? take away? or just stay the same?

I ask because its possible in the near future I may have an opportunity for one.

Thanks,

Jason

I would just leave the gen 1 hood on but thats just my opinion, your car already looks beautiful the way it is being a 92/93 antenna car. If you want the gen 2 look I'd buy the whole thing.

You can get a hood from Autoform that will fit a GEN 1 with the Gen2 look plus the center louver. I have had several Gen 1 cars in the shop with that done and they look great.

my opinion, why would you want a hacked-up hood with vents and awkward ports when you have a clean smooth awesome looking hood already.

I don't think the swap is a problem, though.

I kinda agree with this statement thats the problem. Its a early 93, and I'd hate to modify it because its so damn perfect the way it is. But the gen 1 hood is very huge and very plain, would be nice to have some vents and stuff going on.

I dont know maybe I need to just sell it and buy a gen 2 that way I wont feel bad about modifying it? lol.

I have a fiberglass hood that has the center and wheel vents.
Save you orginal hood. My hood is brand new, ready for paint and can be had at a reasonable price. Send me your email and I can forward pics. The hood weighs 40 lbs.

Your RT is looking Bad A$$ and I think a diamond back hood would add to it. Cost is about the same as a good stock Gen II hood and much better looking.

Plus you can have them put the NACA Duct in it or leave it out.

Thanks, Well diamond back hood would be #1 option, but I "may" be coming across a gen 2 hood that I dont know if i want to pass up.

is the diamond back hood a new hood? or they modify your hood?

It is a complete new hood built by Roger here in Gettysburg PA. I have met Roger and been to his shop, stand up guy who builds a nice product.

Only down side is you may have to wait as he makes them by hand.

With the Gen 2 hood and your sidepipes, it would make the car look more agressive in my opinion. I think my Gen 2 (Final Edition) would look even more agressive if it has sidepipes, with part of the sills being blacked out just like the ones on Gen 1 cars. And if you could keep your original hood, in case you decide to eventually part ways with your car, then you might not have to worry about it (the mod) diminishing the value of your car or moving away from the car original looks.

I think it would hurt the value to a collector. To just a normal person wanting a Viper, I think it might help the value, because as others have said, Gen 1 hoods do look mighty plain. I say if you can't get a Diamondback hood, grab the Gen 2 hood, but keep your Gen 1 hood for the future incase you ever go to the BJ auction :)

Why butcher a seemingly perfect classic?
You'll never get the gaps right like the original team of builders, and I think the big square hioles on top of the fenders weaken the structure.

In the rare chance that a smooth hood and 3 spoke wheels would make a difference in resale of GEN-I's - most of us would have long since parted with the car. Add parts that make you happy, paint the car the way that you want it, and drive the car. I just can't see the logic of some people.

His car has no door handles, no windows, and sidepipes. For a production car, that is f'd up. And like postage stamps, an instant classic.
Do what you want, but keep your original pieces intact.

BTW..."Obviously the Viper" are already being mentioned in Barret-Jackson as the next one to invest in when always asked which will be next. (Re: first line of a preface I read in their mag a year ago by Craig Jackson) He didn't mention any other car on the page.

I have been debating the same thing. I think though i would probably do the diamondback instead of GEN2. I have really been contemplating this. I have the GEN2 Fascia and GEN3 wheels already, so my car is definitely not original, but WAY nicer than it was from the factory. I think most people would agree. In one sense i love the smooth look of the GEN1 hood, and in another I love the aggressiveness of the GEN2 and Diamondbacks.......:dunno:

Definately do it, you've already started to modify it, and it's YOUR car so you should do what you enjoy. I think a Gen II hood would look great but i think a Diamondback hood would look even better! But if your getting a great deal on the Gen 2 hood then i say get it, you'll love they way it looks! Gen 1 hoods are plain and boring in my opinion.

It doesn't require any real modification to the car.... it's a bolt on proposition. So do it.. as long as you keep your original hood it can be changed back quickly and easily.

I'd do it... if I found a great deal on a clean, unrepaired, undamaged Gen 2 hood... I'd do it to my 1996 RT.

IMO it looks fantastic with the smooth hood. If I'm ever in a postition to add another Viper to my collection it will be an early RT just like yours, red to match my GTS. Like others have stated it's your car so do what makes you happy. Worry about resale when the time comes, if it does...

G R E A T looking RT you have there!

My .02 is that if you can keep your stock hood safe then by all means get a gen 2 hood. I prefer the aggressive looks of the gen 2. Do not modify your stock hood.
