I recently picked up a 96 GTS and there seems to be a whining, maybe grinding noise when I hit 3rd gear and above. We changed the transmission fluid, which reduced the noise, but it’s still there. Anyone know what this could be?

Beautiful GTS! It's probably the synchros, unfortunately. I was recently in this situation myself and had to bite the bullet.

I would think that's low enough the synchro should still be okay, maybe the previous owner under shifted a lot?

Like others have said it could be syncros. Viper transmissions have been abnormally loud and I know there was a fluid change at some point to get rid of neutral rattle.

Luckily, Some other cars (GTO, Firebird, Camero) shared the T56 in the Viper, so parts are still readily available.

The process of replacing bearings and syncro's is involved, but not overly difficult.

The right tools, a press for the bearings, elbow grease and some bravery can get it fixed.
