Gen 5 Venom Wheels on Gen 2?

Howdy Folks,

Last week I fulfilled a childhood dream/bucket list and got my first Viper, Gen 2 GTS (2000), black, all original low miles (sans Stop-Tech brake addition second year of its life). It's crazy how great it is to have this in my garage and out on the road, yet I digress.

I would like to set the original wheels aside and put on a set of Gen 5 Venom wheels (hyperblack) and wanted to check with you to see if there are any clearance issues using Gen 5 wheels on the Gen 2 with the fender lips/etc., due to the increase in Gen 5 diameter. Does anyone here have any experience with such? Apologies if this has been answered in another thread, this kid is a Viper newbie.

I certainly thank you for your time and assistance~

A friend has a set of wheels 19's / 20's he had on his gen 2 RT/10. These had no fitting issues. They're not Gen5 wheels but they are huge.

I have seen several photos of Gen II cars with Gen V Sidewinder wheels on them.

they would fit, there has been threads when the 2013 cars came out...I believe the front would stick out just a bit due to the offset, but should be no issues

Stock Gen V wheels are 18's up front and 19's out back. The example you give of "your friend's" 19-20 setup is not pertinent. You also admit they are "not Gen V wheels", which again does not fall in line with the OP's original question thus officially making your response a non sequitur.

Welcome to the club!!!!!! The set up of a gen V is 18 up front and 19 on back I would proceed with caution.

OK. I just went through looking at options because I just went with a set of new wheels in the 18"/19" setup due to the elimination of the 335/30R18 from a few tire vendors. Here is what I was able to gather.

As far as I was able to gather, the offset is the same from 1996 through 2010 Vipers. Those figures pulled off the OEM wheels in many photos is 51mm/71mm on the front/rear wheels. The wheel WIDTHS are the same as well at 10" fronts and 13" rears. The only difference is that on a Gen 3/4 the rear wheels are 19" diameter vs the 18" on the Gen 2. In short since the wheel offset is the same and the width is the same all Gen 3/4 wheels will fit on a Gen 2 and clear everything. Including the brakes if the Gen 2 was upgraded to the Gen 3/4 brake setup.

Wheels from a Gen 2
18x10 inch front with a 50.8mm offset
18x13 inch rear with a 71mm offset

Wheels from a Gen 3 / 4
18x10 inch front with a 50.8mm offset
19x13 inch rear with a 71mm offset

In both cases, if you run the stock setup with no spacers, the front wheel outside face will be about 3.5" out from the hub face. The rear outside face will be 4.25" out.

On the Gen 5 setup. I am finding conflicting info. Some of it does not jive based on the figures I am calculating. On one site, the info I am getting is that the offset on the front and rear of the Gen V wheels is the same 51mm and 71mm. On a couple of our supporting vendor sites, it says the offset in front is 20mm "outside offset" vs a Gen2 to Gen 4 wheel. Based on how I am reading that, it would mean the offset on a Gen V front wheel is 30.8mm (50.8mm - 20mm = 30.8mm). By decreasing the offset you are moving the wheel outward from the hub. The latter (Viper Vendor sites) seem to be more accurate. Below is how I am getting to this:

Wheels from a Gen V
18x10.5 inch front with a 30.8mm offset
19x13 inch rear with a 71mm offset

Given that, the rear will be the same as the Gen 2 to Gen 4. It will ride in the same place with no clearance concerns at all. The fronts will be different. They will ride about 1" further out when compared to the Gen 2 to Gen 4 wheels. Here's why. The fronts are one half inch wider. That alone sticks the face out .25" further out. Then you have the 20mm difference in offset. That moves the wheel out another .75" (approximately - it's actually a touch more). So when you add the extra width and the extra offset the wheel will sit 1" further out. The tire (because it is a wider tread) will be about he same difference. The one benefit, however on the 295 is that you run a 295/30R18 which will be about .75" lower diameter, giving you a touch more clearance.

Bottom line... fronts ride 1" further out. Inisde clearance (steering, brakes, suspension arms ect.) should not be a problem because the offset change outward is more than the inner face increase. In other words, the inside face of the wheel has more clearance than the OEM 18" from a Gen 2 to Gen 4.

(Sigh) don't be a @$$ whole. If 19/20 doesn't create a problem, then 18/19 won't either. So since you were too slow, too lazy, or too busy being a **** on another thread, I decided to provide the information needed.

Grow up.

Not trying to defend anyone... they are on their own because I don't know the apparent history one way or the other....

Having said that what you mentioned is not totally true. There is more to it than the wheel diameter. The sidewall height comes into play, the tread width and the wheel offset. Aftermarket wheel might have a different setup as do, for example, the Forgestar F14's.

Why do you continuously find it to be your responsibility to assassinate my character? Only Jeff, way up on high, may judge me...

I have GEN-V Venoms on my 02GTS with Eilbach springs. Here's my observation. I'm running 295-30-18s up front and the factory 355-30-19's outback. Since I also have a Big Brake Kit, I had been running the spacers and stepped lug nuts with the factory wheels. With the GEN-V wheels, I kept the spacers and stepped lugs nuts on the fronts without any fender clearance issues. They do not "stick out" to any noticeable degree. Now to the backs. With the spacers, the tread where it meets the sidewall would rub on the fender lip during compression; and when the car would 'squat' during acceleration. Solution...take the spacers out, run stock lug nuts. By moving the tire inwards the width of the spacer, it gives me probably another 1/2 inch of sidewall-to-lip clearance which so far has worked well. Bottom-line. GEN-V wheels/tires will fit...and fit better on a stock height car...and look amazing.

You ran the spacers with the Venom for the look or because you needed to clear the brakes? I would assume it is for the look because the Venom clear the Gen V brakes so you should be fine on the Gen 2 with a BB kit.

I am curious because the prevailing info I seem to have found is that the fronts are out about an inch further out (based on the offset info and wheel width) than the Gen 2 to Gen 4 wheels. Having said that, I am curious that you are running spacers on the front to push them out even further.

How big is the spacer? Judging you are running extended lug nuts, I am assuming 5/16" or 3/8"(8mm or 9.5mm). Do you happen to know the offset spec or have a picture of the wheel sizing from the inside of the wheels?

You may throw a wrench in the info I listed above based on the info from a couple of vendor sites.

I put a set of 2014 rattler wheels on my 02 rt10. Your measurements are correct. The wheel is .75 inches shorter in the front and also sticks out nearly .5 inch more than the stock wheel. Rear wheel placement is the same, but the wheel/tire combo is exactly 1 inch taller. No rubbing issues front or back with no spacers.

Should be the same on the Gen 1 cars.

If interested, I have a set of Gen 2 wheels and tires for sale. Brand new BFG tires with 600 miles on them. 8/32nds tread on all 4.
