hi everyone, i have been on this board religiously for the past year or so (since I found it) and the time is finally here for me to start shopping for a viper.I have been absolutely obsessed with these cars since the first Gen came out when i was 8 years old ! I am a bit worried about how the Gen II handles and have heard that the Gen III is a lot more tame. I have never known anyone who has owned a viper personally and have never even been for a ride in one. My question to all of you is, is there anyone in the chicagoland area, preferably the southwest suburbs who would be willing to take me for a ride? I would really like to know what Gen would suit me best.

thank you,

Scott

More important than Gen II or Gen III will be:

"Are you bringing Krispy Kreme or Dunkin Donuts for the Oct. 5 General Meeting held at Fuddruckers in Schaumburg"

All newbies are required to purchase donuts for the first several meetings..

WELCOME!

The Gen III has better performance in pretty much every category (more power, better handling, better brakes, better frame rigidity, slightly lower weight, better driving position, more downforce, stronger transmission.) The only reason to buy the Gen II is if you really like the Gen II styling and don't like the Gen III styling.

your prety much right on target, the gen II (to me) is so much sexier that the gen III. I grew up wanting a gen 2. The gen III, to me has it all but is lacking the sleekness and is tring to make a bolder statement. I want a gen II body with Gen III performance. hence my problem.

I've had several Vipers, and the Gen3 is a much better car for all of the reasons listed above and then some. The previous gen cars are starting to look a bit dated to me. They are still beautiful, but the style was around for a long time. In person, the Gen3 looks very cutting edge, and the lines are gorgeous! Just go to a Viper Club meeting and check both cars out. If you ask for rides, you'll get them.

If you must have the Gen II styling, buy a late model GTS with abs brakes, and begin modding.

dated...

As a GTS owner, I'd have to somewhat agree that the gen1/2 styling looks somewhat dated... but in a good way. To anyone who has read at least one car mag over the last 10 years, you can't NOT know about the Viper. It's ubiquity makes it dated.

Basically, the older Vipers have a timeless design... right down to the gas cap, which resembles sports cars from half a century ago. However, the car naifs I run into thinks the car is brand new. You can believe the car was designed 2 years ago or 20 years ago... much like the Countach.

The SRT's look modern, and not quite as timeless. Still a beautiful car, but you see where computers play a role in design here. IMO, a little less soul, but it handles like a dream. For my money, I'd rather get a gen2 and mod it to perform as well as a gen3.

In reality, you can't go wrong with either. :2tu:

Re: dated...

Scott,

come to Fuddruckers Next Weds. We have anywhere from 25 to 49 vipers there pending weather. I am hoping a new SRT coupe will be there...

Re: dated...

Usually you have to buy a round of drinks for everyone. Never ask about it though... Just walk up and buy a round and have them bring it in. When you ask about it you have to buy 2... ;)

I would agree but you are going to have to add in Cost. Gen II $35k-$60K. Gen III $55K-$100K

Sure Rob, coax a round or two out of him. I was trying for the krispy kreme's with little success. Oh well,

Re: dated...

I had the same dilemma at the beginning of this year. In the end I chose a almost new (2000m) 02/ fe/ gts. I know the srt is a better performer, but I love the race car feel of the gts. I like the fact that this car has no manners, it's so fun to drive. The srt is not much faster in a straight line, I keep up with them easily on the roads. I don't need to tell you about the appearance of the gts and what it does to people, I'm sure you know. You just have to decide what you want, the good news is you will be happy either way!

Re: dated...

sorry to disapoint you guys, i'm not 21 for another couple of monthes. so hey, ice water all around ! I'll even spring for a lemon wedge ... well the GTS is my favorite body style, but i would like to have the open top convertable feel and I am discouraged with not being able to take the hard top with me in case of bad weather or a road trip. and i'm not to reassured with the soft top...
