I just had the same problem on my '94 and had the bushings replaced. There are 4 of them and they cost about $3.00 apiece. The Viper tech indicated that the labor was "actual time". Anyway, the whole job cost me about $80 and it's as good as new. Go with the repair. It's got to be more cost effective.
The problem is so simple to understand once you can visualize it. The engineers appeared to have goofed because the most frequently used pedal is located on the end of the shaft, having support from only one side. The brake pedal is in the center of the bracket and has support from both ends of the shaft.
I was going to become an engineer at one point in time, but I figured if you've seen one train, you've seen them all!!!
