Getting Ready to do Brakes/What\'s Best?

I know there are different options for brakes. My car is at 30,000 miles and the fronts are getting thin. Mostly street driving. Running stock gen 1 three spokes. Brake dust cleans pretty easy and does not show as much as on chrome.

a) Should I stick with Mopar pads?
b) How long does the job take? Will I have to leave the car overnight?
c) Budget, how much? I do not expect to have any trouble with rotors or calipers.

Thanks

I would go with the EBC Greens. I like them a lot and they seem to work better than the stock ones with less dust. It's really not a hard job to do. I did mine in less than 40 mins with my air tools.

I know I had my squabbles with JonB in the past, but I would say give him a call...he got mine to me pretty quickly.

I was told the EBC's are much quieter also.

EBC greens work great for dust. They are OK for autocrossing, but not track use. Scuffing the rotors is easily done with sandpaper. Make sure you wind in the piston on the back brakes.
There is a special tool for it, but if you do a search here, you will find a picture of a socket ground down to work. I made one myself. Without a tool, turning in the piston is not easy.

Steve is correct. They are great for reducing dust. They're so-so for stopping. Miserable for the track.

Buy all means do the job yourself, it's cake. All of my driving is on the street, for me EBC Greens are the way to go. As mentioned above, scuff your rotors to get any residue of the stock pad off of them. On the rear, the caliper piston must be turned in, not just pressed in. There are 2 holes on the face of the piston, just use needlenose plies in the holes, turn a press the piston in at the same time. It's a bit tough but not impossible. You can do all brake pads all the way around in an hour, hour and change if you lolligag.

Jeff..... Mopar pads cost almost 3X more than EBC! EBC lasts 70% as long, cost 35% of OE. Better braking at street temps than OE. No squeek. Very little dust.

Job takes 1 hour if no fluid bleed. But BLEED fluid please ! Any brown? Send it down...........

30k front rotors MAY need to be resurfaced......

RUCKDR and I spoke via email. Anyone else interested in the floor tiles can find them at Home Depot. They are inexpensive, durable and easily replaced if need be. They are the stick on kind, not grouted down.

Re: Getting Ready to do Brakes/What\'s Best?

Sorry for hijacking your post, Jeff…

I just picked up a brand new 02 Graphite GTS (currently less than 80 miles) and want to change the brake pads (front and rear) out to the EBC Greens.

Have a few questions:

1. Can someone describe the process of "scuffing" the rotors? What grit sandpaper? From the center out or around the rotor? How much pressure to apply? If I do this soon the car will have less than 100 miles on it.

2. After "turning" the rear pistons in do you simply replace the pads and reinstall the caliber?

3. Other than the ground socket/needle nose pliers, are there any special tools I will need? Hate having to go tool shopping with the car up in the air!

4. Can you see much of the Green Pads once they are installed?

5. Torque for the lug nuts? Torque for the caliber bolts?

Stiffler, my local Home Depot does not seem to have the tiles. Do you have a SKU # or product name?

Thanks,
Steve

I wasted money on a universal tool. It ended up not fitting the piston and I needed to order the correct tool from the dealer. You can use needle nose pliers but the tool makes it much easier.

Re: Getting Ready to do Brakes/What\'s Best?

Jeff...I had the garage floor sealed (clear) when I had the house built. Concrete is inherently dusty. All I did in preparation was to hose the floor off and give it a good scrubbing and let dry. Tiles are sticking nicely.

Steve T...the tiles are made by Armstrong, Stylistik II Series. I have a box of black, part #26205. I'm waiting for Home Depot to get another box of white in so I can have some extra white. The part # for white is either #26204 or #26206, I can't remember which. More than likely when you find the black the white will be right next to it on the shelf at Home Depot. Good Luck.

Re: Getting Ready to do Brakes/What\'s Best?

Okay guys and gals, I have a question on the EBCs. After my nastly little brake incident with the honda I changed over to EBC pads and slotted rotors. I absolutly love them.

Now the question - I know that EBC makes the pads for the Viper, but do they make the rotors as well? If so any thoughts on changing the OEMs up for these?

Check with JonB at Parts Rack. He sells the EBC rotors for $569 for a set of four. I just installed them on my 97 GTS and love the looks as well as the performance. The installation was also a snap. I'm running the street with EBC green on the front and EBC reds on the rear. Brake dust and squealing are gone!
