What is the most effective way to hit ny goal of either 11.5 in the quarter, 130 trap speed or 500 rwhp on street tires?

My 99 gts dyno'd about 420 rwhp with smooth tubes, k and n, and high flow cat with exhaust.

In the quarter, I was only able to pull off a 12.45 @ 116 hitting a 1.98 60 foot with stock exhaust and street tires. Can I get to my goals with just bolt on things?

I was thinking headers might get me another 30 rwhp and maybe 15 from a tune but i would still be short 35 rwhp and probably only hit 11.8 at the best with a 122 trap. Suggestions?

i ran a 12.0 with my 01 on street tires and a 2.1 60ft. i think i can get a stock gts into the mid 11's with tires and practice! i took a 2003 Z06 with 405 fly wheel stock hp to an 11.97 on a 1.79 60 ft and the viper has about 50 more hp than that did!

What did you trap on the 12.0 run? I had a slightly better 60 ft time but ran almost half a second slower than you did.

12.0 at 119.xx mph here when stock, first time on a track. a couple of guys have gone 11.50 in a stokc viper on pilots. if you practice and throw a set of drag radials, im sure you can get there.

but to go 130mph, thats gonna take a power adder

yikes! i have seen handfuls of bone stock GTSs run 12.0 with people who are just decent drivers. if you make 420 to the wheels the car should easily go 12.0-11.9

Your power and E.T. goals seem easily achievable. On my Gen III, 500whp did get me an 11.5 on very hot Texas summer day on street tires. My trap was a tick under 126mph. You will need a power adder or some heads/cam to get you that 130mph trap.

FROG is doing an 11.3 with alot less than 500whp and some DRs. Check out his THREAD

Yep^ Been there done that. On a bit cooler day, and I am not a expert by no means. Actaully my first time ever at the 1/4 mile period. Still haven't bet it though.

My '97 GTS went 11.78 at 120mph with 436 rwhp. Only mods were resonator and rear muffler delete, smooth tubes, and K&N air filters. I also had old Hoosier DOT track tires on it. 60' was a 1.76.

So looks like 500 rwhp will get me my 11.5 or better. Basically 100 rwhp will shave off a second. So now, what is the most cost effective way excluding nos? Dont really need more than 500. Or to go faster than 11.5

Ported heads, cam swap, headers, tune. It will sound awesome and run like a scalded dog.

Striker Heads/cam/headers/Exhaust/ DC mail order tune gave me 612 rwhp and 10.71@130mph in the 1/4 mile at 3600ft altitude.

Impressive! How much power did the striker heads and cam add? Price range?

This is more of what I was thinkin', a 12:45 seems pretty slow even with a stock viper! jmo
What launch techniques do you guys use? It was already very difficult for me to hit the 12.45 stock.

Gotta chime in.

In a zero da a well driven stock gts is a 11.8 at 119-120 mph vehicle at 400 rwhp

In a negative 1000 da a well driven stock gts is a 11.7 at 120-121 mph

Dont belieave any hype about a stock gts hitting 11.5 at 122 plus. The record is 11.67 at 121 mph.

With that said your car has a lot left on the table. In my gen2 I saw that shifting a 5500 rpms got me better quartermile results than holding out till 6k. Past 5500 rpms the power seemed to die out.

I got a 12.4 at 116 mph my only night testing it stock at 1000 ft elevation in 75 degree weather. Take pointers from the many experienced here and dont even think of modding till your skills net a 12.1 at 118 plus mph.

-check what your tracks elevation is
-check what your tracks density altitude is

These can make you a second slower than say a cool aired sea level track in virginia.

As for the 500 rwhp and 130 mph traps mixed with an 11. 5.

The 11.5 is no biggie. Stock gen2s on slicks have hit 11.5 off low 1.7 60 foots. Stock gen3s have done 11.2 on slicks

500 rwhp on a gen 2 just isnt possible. Full bolt ons and a good tune can get you to the 450-465 range. Heads on top of this may achieve your goal of 500 rwhp

Id suggest 460 rwhp from a dyno tune and every bolt on you can think of plus a nice set of drag radials, followed by 50 passes down your local strip learning the snake.

I personally started off at 12.5 at 117 mph in my 457 rwhp 03.... 20 passes later at the same power level I hit 11.97 at 121 mph. Just 33 rwhp later at 490 rwhp from mods and 100 quarter passes later Im sitting at 11.5 at 124.9 mph off a 1). 9 60 foot so still a lot left.

As for the 130 trap. DMAN hit 126 mph with just 460 rwhp in a gen3 because of a good density altitude. You hit 460 rwhp in your gen2 and find a negative density altitude combined with the smaller rear rims of the gen2 and I think a 127-128 mph trap is possible if all the stars alighn. But never a 130.

GOODLUCK

I made a lot of drag passes in my '97 on 4 different drag strips. All were on the factory tires except for one day. Some tracks do a decent track prep, others don't. At best, I was able to run in the 12.0's at 117-118 bone stock. Never could make that magical 11 second pass on street tires. Obviously the launch is key but I also found that if you can't hammer the second gear shift without the rear end wheel hopping, you may as well abort the pass and try again.

Ran under 11.5 stock. Check my gallery for time slips. Had smooth tubes and mopar exhaust which were factory items for a acr. Stock tires as well.

wow..this whole density altitude thing is new to me. found a density altitude calculator and looks like on my run, the DA was +1555. this was done at sears point raceway aka infineon. hopefully with the tips from you guys on this thread, I can get closer to the 12.0 mark with my exhaust on and then get to the 11.5 if I have added headers and a tune by then.

The car when from 399 rwhp (it's a 2001 cream puff) stock with just a Cat-back, to 612 RWHP from adding Striker heads/cam (shaved for 11.1 to 1 comp), headers, Smooth tubes, Filters, Alum FW, and tune. So that list of mods (the heads/cam being the big power adders) added 213 rwhp on the same dyno.

And it went from running 13.4@112mph with just a cat back (on stock tires), to a 10.7@130mph (on ET streets) at the same track at 3600ft altitude (real Altitude, the DA that that track here in the summer is normally 5000+).

60ft is key. Stock Viper with DR or ET Streets should go real close to your goal. About a 1.50 sixty should do it.

PS: Invest in upgraded halfshafts!

Mopar exhaust was not a factory item for the ACR as far as i know. Sure a dealership could have Added it and sold as new but i dont think any vipers were shipped from The Conner Assembly Plant with any of the moparperformance mods.

However, i dont see any reason a true stock ACR couldnt run a tenth or two faster than a regular Stock GTS(11.67record) seeing as though is is like 50lbs lighter and has 10 more hp. Only downside being the firmer suspension would make for a more difficult launch.

ALOT, and they are VERY expensive. To the point that if you are are the typical powerhungry guy into dragracing it would be more cost efficient to do a SC or TT.

OP if your goal is 500. Like Twister said. Every bolt-on+tune will get you 450-465. So all you would need to push her closer to 500 would be ported factory heads.(GregGood for that)
If you are a DIY kinda guy then follow this thread:

dyc1077, i gotta encourage you to get your viper out onto a roadcourse and see how the Viper can be pushed to its limits through the turns as well as in a straight line. It is much more satisfying to do several laps around a roadcourse in a 20min session(1200seconds) as opposed to tearing through the gears in a straight line praying you dont break something in 11.5 seconds:)

goodluck with whatever you do with your Viper:2tu:

I used to tell people before they head to the drag strip to get a "G-Tech" and go find a safe road and practice some 0-60MPH passes to get down the launch and also some 1/4 mile passes. That's how I learned to drive down the 1/4 after about 100 passes in former Mustangs and other cars in my G-Tech. Now days, you can just use your iPhone with a "G-Timer" type of app to do the same thing, but the old school G-Tech is still my favorite.

I also knocked my 11.5 time previousely mentioned, with the same mods, down to an 11.3 when it was cooler out. Now I am working on installing a Paxton blower, so no more 11's for me.

Op did you say you raced att Infeneon?

If so that track is just slow!!!!!!

Canyon707 drags his black 475 rwhp srt there and the guy is a phenominal driver and still only manages high 11s at 118-120. I think his best is a 11.5 at121 mph off a 1.7 60 foot.

That track is just slowwwwwwwwwwwww!

phew...i thought something might have been wrong with my car or my driving. infineon does have what seems to be an uphill section at the last part of the quarter mile. i wish there was another drag strip closer to the south bay

Yea if his 475 rwhp gen 3 is tapping out at 121 mph then its not surpriseing your 5 mph less with 420rwhp or so.

FastMatt is correct, heads and cam package. 130mph in trap speed equals at least 10K in parts.
